According to Vericast’s 2024 Restaurant Trends Watch, nearly 60% of consumers are cutting back on dinner reservations in favor of more affordable options like fast food and frozen pizza. Two-thirds of American consumers cite rising restaurant prices as the reason for changing their meal plans. This is a 3% increase compared to the number of consumers who felt the same way in 2023.

Rising food costs are pushing Americans away from casual dining experiences and back to drive-thrus and freezer aisles.

Gen Z and Millennials are bearing the brunt of the economic burden. 71% would choose a budget meal at home over a restaurant meal. These numbers compare to 68% of members of other generations with similar switches.

Consumers are increasingly viewing traditional sit-down restaurant dinners as a luxury they are willing to sacrifice. As Americans seek to cut back on thoughtless spending amid inflation and rising overall costs, buyers are noting that costs associated with dinner dates and happy hours have risen disproportionately. Promoting affordable dinner plans

Latest coupon issuing method

Social media and apps encourage Americans to change their food-related spending. Consumers cite access to recipes on platforms like TikTok as motivating their decision to spend less at restaurants. About 39% of respondents were inspired by cooking videos, and 29% admitted to having tried it themselves by copying a recipe they saw on social media.

About a quarter of Americans claim to have used a restaurant app in the last month, primarily as a way to earn in-app discounts. Restaurant apps often feature special in-app promotions or “online-only” sales where customers must order using the app or his website to receive the coupon.

More than half say coupons and discounts make them more likely to try a restaurant, order more, or upgrade their order. 49% say sales help them choose a restaurant.

Additionally, mailed flyers are still an effective marketing tool. 42% are more likely to order from a restaurant if they have a printed coupon.

Cuisine that prioritizes convenience

Copycat recipes have long been a staple among casual home cooks. These recipes are often aimed at recreating dishes from famous chain restaurants, such as Panda Express beef and broccoli. These recipes promote accessibility for people who decide to stay at home. These recipes give you room to customize your family’s classic favorites, like avoiding allergens or changing spice levels.

Online recipe sites are noticing changes in traffic as Americans increasingly choose cooking over the convenience of eating out. Statista data from March 2024 shows that recipe websites received more traffic than food ordering services like DoorDash and Domino’s Pizza’s online ordering portal.

The popularity of online recipe platforms allows consumers to get their favorite dishes at a fraction of the cost. Americans can try their hand at chicken fried rice and Teppanyaki without the wok using online recipes, and watch informative short-form TikTok and Instagram videos to learn and utilize proper techniques. .

Cooking at home comes with its own challenges, including sourcing special ingredients, meal preparation mistakes, cleanup, tableware preparation, and time investments, but American families still prefer to prepare meals at home.
