Zeenat Aman’s recent views on cohabitation have angered her contemporaries. The actor, a yesteryear who rose to fame with Qurbani in several hit films, has a huge fan following on social media and her posts about his life and relationships have been the subject of much discussion. It has become. However, Zeenat’s strong recommendation to live together before her marriage did not seem to go down well with Mumtaz or Saira Banu, who did not support her idea. As more and more people choose cohabitation before marriage or instead of marriage, it is important to consider both perspectives stated. (Freepik)

“If you are in a relationship, I highly recommend living together before getting married. This is the same advice I have always given to my sons who are or have been in a live-in relationship. I think it’s logical for two people to first put their relationship to the ultimate test before involving their families and the government: be the best versions of themselves for a few hours a day. It’s easy to share. Do you get over a bad mood in the bathroom? Do you agree on what to eat for dinner every night? Are you really compatible? I know I’m being a bit strict about “living within,” but then again, society is strict about so many things. the actor wrote.

As more and more people choose to cohabit before or without marriage, it is important to consider both of the aforementioned perspectives. The psychological implications of this arrangement are worth careful consideration. While live-in partnerships have certain benefits, they can also pose potential problems for mental health.

“Like any other important decision in life, pursuing a cohabiting relationship should be discussed carefully and openly between partners. Ultimately, the impact of a cohabiting relationship on mental health is determined by personal beliefs, “It varies greatly depending on cultural background and social factors. Couples can negotiate this arrangement wisely by encouraging open communication, having clear expectations, and emphasizing self-awareness.” says Dr. Chandni Tughnait, an expert in alternative medicine, psychotherapist, life coach, business coach, and NLP. Healer, Founder & Director – Gateway to Healing.

In an interview with HT Digital, Dr. Chandni shares the five main advantages and disadvantages of a live-in relationship:

Strong Points

1. Mental safety: Living together can foster a sense of emotional security and companionship, both of which are important for mental health. Having regular companionship helps foster a supportive environment.

2. Shared responsibility: Living together properly distributes household and financial burdens, reduces stress, and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

3. Deeper understanding: Living together allows you to better understand and adapt to your partner’s quirks, habits, and eccentricities. This intimate knowledge helps with emotional maturity and personal growth.

4. Easier transition to long-term commitments. For those who are unsure whether their marriage will last forever, a cohabiting relationship can be a useful intermediate step. Cohabitation allows partners to enjoy the many benefits of a long-term, committed relationship without the obligation of marriage.

5. Flexibility and freedom: Unlike traditional marriage, cohabiting relationships offer a sense of flexibility and freedom, which some people find emotionally liberating. Without the legal and social pressures that come with marriage, partners may feel more independent and in control of their lives.

Cons

1. Boundary blur: The lack of a legal or social framework can create uncertainty about the level of commitment, future expectations, and personal limitations. This ambiguity can lead to feelings of anxiety, insecurity, and poor communication.

2. External pressure: Despite societal changes, cohabiting relationships can still be stigmatized or rejected by certain social groups or ethnic backgrounds. Overcoming these external influences can be mentally exhausting for some people.

3. Commitment concerns: Although cohabitation can be an indicator of long-term compatibility, it can also delay the commitment decision-making process. The absence of a written, legally enforceable agreement can create persistent doubts and uncertainties.

4. Financial entanglements: Sharing financial assets and property without the legal protection of marriage can create problems in a divorce.

5. Lack of social awareness: Cohabiting partners may struggle to obtain certain legal rights, privileges, and social recognition that married couples have. A lack of formal appreciation can lead to feelings of invalidation.
