Sophie Mair and Julie Lambreau got three pet alpacas 14 years ago, but when their numbers started to grow, they started thinking of clever ways to make a living from them.

They started Cheshire Alpacas at Oakdale Farm off Keepers Lane in 2018 and not only sell socks made from alpaca wool, but also host alpaca walks, birthday parties, wreaths and bow ties. We also offer wedding ceremonies with alpacas wearing .

Their latest idea, “An outdoor Pilates class with alpacas (commonly known as “Al Pilates”), is attracting a lot of attention.

On Friday 10th May, Sophie and Julie were invited to a glamorous ceremony at Bolton Wonderers Football Club to be named Leisure and Tourism Business of the Year at the North West Family Business Awards.

Sophie said she “couldn’t believe it” when their names were read out.

The 27-year-old said:

“That song, I’m the top of this world, This song was playing while I went to collect my award and it still comes back to me when I hear it on the radio.

“We started with three alpacas and now we have 43.

“When you hear the laughter from the visitors when the alpacas are brought into the Pilates room and start making noises, you know it’s really good for the alpacas. They love it.

“The girls are pregnant or weaning most of the year, so the boys are only available for Pilates and other experiences. I think they need a little break.

“Some of them are currently pregnant, with due dates in June and July.

“They are the real stars of the show and will no doubt come in for all the treats and snuggles.”

Julie, 49, said: ‘I’ve been nominated by at least one visitor, but I don’t know who it is. I’m really grateful.

“We had 40 applications in our department alone, so I think we must be doing something right.”

This is the third summer that Cheshire Alpacas has held Al Pilates classes on the farm, led by Rim-based instructor Leila Coulter.

Leila, who has been teaching Pilates for over 15 years, says working with Cheshire alpacas has made a lifelong ambition come true.

She said: “Pilates is a whole mind and body experience and alpaca really adds a holistic aspect.

“Practicing while immersed in nature adds great value to the overall experience.

“I was really honored to be asked to do this because when I’m abroad I often see classes taking place outdoors, so it just seemed like the right thing to do.

“This is something I have always wanted to propose, but here in the UK the climate prevents most people from doing so.

“But here, there’s more of an interest in the animals, so people are pushed even further. It really makes a big difference.”

The team are taking bookings for alpilates sessions on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm and Fridays from 6.15pm, and information can be found on the Cheshire Alpacas website.

The cost is £20 per person and includes an alpaca interaction.
