More than 200 Boise parents signed a letter asking the district to create a committee to address four initiatives to support students.
BOISE, ID — A group of parents is calling on the Boise School District to introduce new solutions to address the growing need for mental health support in schools.
More than 200 parents of students in the Boise School District signed a letter to the district’s superintendent and school board saying schools need more mental health supports and solutions.
The letter states that the two main factors behind depression and suicidal thoughts are high stress and social isolation. The group proposed four initiatives he proposed to support students’ mental health and well-being.
- Use of appropriate technology to limit distractions during lessons
- Peer-to-peer support and mentorship with the creation of Hope Squad Boise
- Increase authentic outdoor experiences
- Adjust start times to suit student sleep needs
“This is out of concern for our parents, our children, and our desire to best support teachers, administrators, and school districts in making Boise schools better places for all children. It was a grassroots effort that was born,” BSU said. said Jen Pearce, a professor and Boise parent.
The petition organizers said their goal is to collect as many signatures as possible and continue to gather support for the effort, while communicating with members of the BSD community about the progress of the action items.
The group is asking districts to form four committees to work on different initiatives. Several parents met with district administration on Monday to discuss the proposed changes.
Pearce said the meeting went well and parents are looking forward to a follow-up meeting to further discuss future efforts.
