The Village is a resource center located within the Contemporary Learning Academy, one of Denver’s “Pathway Schools.” With federal pandemic relief for schools set to expire in a few months, Denver Public Schools announced it will close The Villages on June 30. (Melanie Asmar/Chalkbeat)
A center that provides free food, clothing, mental health support and workforce training to students and families at six Denver public schools will close within three months.
The middle schools and high schools served by the resource center are known as “pathway schools,” helping students who have struggled in traditional schools or who are at risk of not graduating. Three years ago, a resource center called The Village opened at one of his Pathway Schools, Contemporary Learning Academy.
DPS spokesman Scott Pribble said the village was started with a grant and is currently being funded by federal pandemic relief funds, known as ESSER, set aside for schools. The village’s operating costs this year were $771,690, he said.
But that funding is expiring, so Denver Public Schools has until Sept. 30 to pay out the last of its pandemic relief money. Pribble said The Village is scheduled to close on June 30th.
