United States: Grocery e-commerce sales declined slightly in May
According to data released by Brick Meets Click and Mercatus, e-commerce grocery sales totaled $6.8 billion in May, down just under 1% from the same period a year ago. Pickup orders accounted for nearly half of U.S. digital grocery sales, while delivery accounted for about a third of the market, with home delivery channels accounting for about 19% share.

Lidl to remain Romania’s top food retailer in 2023
Lidl maintained its position as Romania’s top food retailer by sales in 2023, a position it has held since 2020. The company recorded growth of 17.6 percent, above the rate of inflation, reaching 21.7 billion Romanian lei (4.4 billion euros). According to an analysis by online portal Economica based on financial results released by the Ministry of Finance, the German discounter made a net profit of more than 1.07 billion Romanian lei (215 million euros), up 2.2 percent year-on-year.

IT systems and high costs eat into South Africa’s SPAR’s profits
South Africa’s second-largest supermarket retailer, SPAR Group, announced a 7.6 percent fall in half-year profit as rising costs outpaced sales growth that was lower than management expected and problems with IT systems hit gross profit margins.The grocer said pre-tax profit from continuing operations for the six months to March 31 fell 11.2 percent to 1.1 billion rand ($59 million) due to high finance costs.
