Mumbai: The festival of Baisakhi is considered the most important in Sikhism. Baisakhi is celebrated in the first month of Vikram Sanvat when the Sun enters Aries. For this reason, this festival is also known as Mesha Sankranti.

Baisakhi is a festival that celebrates the harvest season. In Punjab and Haryana, Baisakhi celebrations have a special charm. Let’s find out when is Baisakhi 2024 and what it means.

Baisakhi 2024 Date

Baisakhi will be celebrated on April 13, 2024 this year. On Baisakhi day, Poila Boishakh in Bengal, Satuan in Bihar, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Vishu in Kerala and Bihu in Assam are also celebrated.

Significance of Baisakhi

This day marks the ripening of the Rabi crop and people offer prayers to the Lord and give thanks for the success of the harvest. The first part of Rabi’s harvest is offered to the god of fire to bless the next harvest’s abundance. The cooked food is then consumed by the public.

Other than celebrating a bumper harvest, the reason to observe Baisakhi is also that the Khalsa Panth was founded in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru of Sikhism.

How is Baisakhi celebrated?

Farmers celebrate Baisakhi by worshiping nature and God, expressing gratitude and performing Bhangra dance. They visit Gurudwaras, recite Guru Granth Sahib, sing hymns and make donations. The scriptures state that taking a dip in the Ganga on Baisakhi is the same as performing Ashvamedha His Yajna. It is believed that worshiping the Sun on this day when it enters the first sign of the zodiac, Aries, will bring success throughout the year.
