The seeds of ISKCON’s existence in Zambia were sown more than 40 years ago when believers led by Bahumananda embarked on a massive preaching safari across Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. This pioneering effort laid the foundation for a spiritual movement that resonated across generations. Jagovind Das, current project leader and ISKCON Zambia Temple Head, reflected on the journey in a recent interview with ISKCON News. Spreading spiritual wisdom gives us resilience. ”
Under Jaygovind’s leadership, ISKCON Zambia has experienced significant growth and transformation. The establishment of his ISKCON temple in Lusaka testifies to the persistent commitment of his followers and growing interest in spiritual teachings. Mr Jagobind said: “Managing a growing community and temple comes with unique challenges. We are committed to innovative ways to become financially independent while remaining true to Srila Prabhupada’s mission and our spiritual principles.” I needed to find it.”
One of the key support programs that has garnered praise is the annual Ratha Yatra festival, which celebrates Lord Jagannath’s chariot procession. Mr. Jagovind shared his insights about its beginnings and development. “The Ratha Yatra is not just a religious event, it is a festival of unity and diversity. In the early days, we had to be resourceful. We built the chariots ourselves, It reminds me of our humble beginnings with makeshift objects,” he recalled with a laugh. “Once, she even used her daughter’s doll to represent a god until a proper god was brought to Zambia.”

Over the years, the Ratha Yatra Festival has grown in size and participation, becoming a signature event for devotees as well as the wider Zambian community. Collaborations with local organizations, schools, ARYA, and various organizations further enriched the cultural tapestry of the festival. It has been transformed into a platform for interreligious dialogue, social cohesion, and spiritual reflection.
In his dual role as spiritual leader and businessman, Mr. Jagobind has been instrumental in supporting the temple financially. “We established his Govinda’s Restaurant not only as a source of income but also as a platform to promote vegetarianism and healthy living. It has become a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. ,” Jagovind explained. He also mentioned plans to develop the temple as a gift shop, further contributing to the sustainability of the project.
The impact of ISKCON’s work extends beyond temporary successes. Reflecting on moments of personal growth and spiritual fulfillment, Jagobind said, “It’s incredibly rewarding to see individuals change their lives through spiritual practice and community support. It inspires our resolve to overcome and continue our mission with renewed vigor.”
