If there’s one thing I’m particularly strict about when it comes to my beauty routine, it’s body lotion. While I sometimes forget steps in my nighttime skincare routine, I never forget to apply body lotion in the morning, whether I shower that day or not. For the most part, the efforts have paid off; aside from the occasional rash on my hands, arms, and neck, my skin is super smooth. But because I’m a curious and questioning person, I wanted to know if there was something I was missing when it came to applying body lotion.
So I Dermatologist Dr. Nathan Wesley Skin Care and Laser Doctor, Beverly Hills, USA I wanted to hear her advice and find out what role body lotion can play in reducing the signs of aging. We’re not talking about anti-aging here — getting older is a perk, after all — but using body lotion can help protect your skin and keep it looking and feeling its best as you move through life.
Generally, the guidelines for applying body lotion are very simple: “We recommend applying body lotion every day.” Wesley “If you’ve recently showered, it’s best to apply within three to five minutes of your bath or shower, as it helps seal in moisture and restores skin barrier function that may have been disrupted by soaps and detergents.”
However, while it may seem simple at first glance, there are a few things people are said to do wrong when it comes to body lotion. Wesley.
What are the most common mistakes people make when it comes to body lotion?
1. Not applying enough: Don’t be stingy. You don’t need to apply the entire bottle to your body, but apply it generously.
2. Don’t paint the whole thing: Make sure to moisturize every inch of your body: apply lotion only to your upper body and don’t forget your legs.
3. Using a lotion that doesn’t moisturize well: This depends on your skin type and needs. Overall, you should choose products that contain nutrients, vitamins, and ingredients that keep your skin moisturized for longer. “I prefer to use body lotions that have natural ingredients and less unnecessary ingredients.” Wesley “I find that creamy textures or oil-infused lotions often provide longer-lasting hydration rather than thin, watery lotions that tend to evaporate off the skin’s surface. Ingredients such as shea butter, cold-pressed oils, borage seed oil and fatty acids such as ceramides tend to have better barrier protection properties.”
How can body lotion help take care of your skin as you age?
One thing I didn’t realize about body lotion is that it plays a huge role in protecting my skin as I age. In the skincare world, I was only focused on eye creams, serums, face oils, and night creams, and I never considered that a body lotion habit could also help me maintain glowing, firm skin.
“When your skin is dry, wrinkles often become more noticeable.” Wesley “The same ingredient has moisturizing and barrier protection effects. [mentioned above] It also helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Additionally, topical antioxidants help repair free radical damage caused by the sun and the environment, while peptide ingredients help support collagen growth.”
How often should I apply body lotion?
Regarding application, Wesley If you don’t have acne-prone skin, and the lotion isn’t clogging your pores, you can apply it as often as you feel comfortable, she says. “If you have mature or dry skin, it’s best to apply lotion in the morning and evening, especially after a bath or shower,” she advises. Whether you have mature skin or not, Wesley Frequency of application will depend on the climate you live in, as cold, dry, windy weather may require more moisturizing. Other contributing factors include exposure to hard water or soap, and underlying medical conditions such as eczema or thyroid disease.
