Bruce Willis has frontotemporal dementia and is cared for by his wife Emma Heming Willis, with whom he now shares his passion for gardening.

Emma Heming Willis has admitted that gardening has become a “kind of meditation” for her since her husband Bruce Willis was diagnosed with dementia.

The actor’s health issues first became public in 2022, when his family revealed he had a speech disorder called aphasia. He was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) a year later.

Now, Emma has taken to Instagram to ask her fans for advice, revealing how she’s overcome her gardening challenges. Sharing a video of herself tending to her plants, Emma wrote: “I wouldn’t say I’m great at gardening, but gardening has been a kind of meditation for me over the last few years.”

“Getting out of the house and moving my body has made the process of learning something new really enjoyable. If you’d like, please post your helpful basic gardening tips in the comments section below!”

In the video, Emma added: “People were worried about why we don’t have a gardener. We do have a gardener, but this is a place I want to keep for myself.”

“Obviously the maintenance has been awful but better late than never,” one wrote. Fans were very supportive of Emma’s hobby, offering some words of advice in the comments section.

“Emma I suggest planting some native plants in there – they’re easy to care for and a real natural companion,” one person wrote, while another suggested: “Mint and rosemary would dominate – grow them in pots.”

“I love gardening! It’s so therapeutic. Weeding, deadheading, pruning, watering. It’s all a little at a time,” added a third fan, while another commented, “Just hanging on… it’s soothing without any effort. Oh and you never over water… you just keep those baby plants hydrated!”

Emma has been caring for Bruce since he was diagnosed with FTD and has been an active campaigner for raising awareness of the disease, which according to the National Institute on Aging can cause a variety of symptoms, including abnormal behavior, emotional problems, difficulty communicating, having trouble working and having trouble walking.
