What to look out for when choosing an anti-wrinkle eye cream
According to Dr. Nazarian, one of the best ingredients for fighting fine lines is retinol. If you’re unfamiliar with this vitamin A derivative, it boosts collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines, while also evening out skin tone and reducing signs of hyperpigmentation (say goodbye to dark circles).
But one word of warning: retinol is a powerful active ingredient that can irritate sensitive skin, so always do a patch test before applying any new product all over your face, especially under your eyes, and always follow with sunscreen.
Another ingredient that Dr. Firth calls essential for brightening skin is vitamin C, a powerhouse of antioxidants that fights free radical damage and fades the appearance of pigmentation. Naturally, a brightening eye cream needs vitamin C; in fact, any antioxidant is a good thing. “Antioxidants are a bonus in an eye cream, as they help protect the skin from environmental damage and prevent premature aging,” says Dr. Nazarian. “Everyone can benefit from that.”
Dehydration can also worsen wrinkles, so if you notice your skin is feeling dry, consider adding products with hyaluronic acid to your skincare routine.”[Hyaluronic acid] “It’s a moisturizer that hydrates, plumps and hydrates the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines,” says Dr. Firth.
What else? “Peptides can be a great alternative to retinol,” points out Dr. Liu. “They can stimulate collagen production in the skin and reduce the appearance of crow’s feet with their moisturizing properties.”
When to start using eye cream
While there’s no right age, “you can start using eye cream preventatively — and the earlier the better,” says Dr. Nazarian. While other parts of the face may not (after all, you don’t want to be burdened with future sagging skin in your teens), the eyes are especially prone to showing wear and tear. “This part of the body is so thin that even a little bit of damage is much more noticeable when you’re young,” she says, and also recommends wearing sunglasses as a preventative protection measure.
