Vitamin K is not a vaccine and does not cause newborn deaths. It is given to babies if a vitamin K deficiency is identified to prevent fatal bleeding.

context

Some Facebook posts (Archives can be found here, here and here.) The posts, which have been viewed hundreds of times, claim that Vitamin K injections are one of the most dangerous vaccines given to newborns and can be deadly. The posts also claim that the ingredient is toxic and that the label on the black box states that it is deadly.

However, these claims are false.

in fact

Vitamin K It is a fat-soluble vitamin essential for blood clotting, clot formation, and wound healing.

Babies are born with very low levels of vitamin K because the placenta is impermeable to vitamin K and breast milk contains only trace amounts. That’s why mothers can’t take supplements while pregnant or breastfeeding to ensure they pass vitamin K to their babies. If a baby shows signs of a life-threatening medical condition called vitamin K deficiency bleeding, doctors strongly recommend parents give them a 0.5 mg or 1.0 mg vitamin K injection (translation) has a 20% mortality rate. Newborns who do not receive vitamin K injections are 81 times more likely to have severe, potentially fatal, bleeding than those who do. Not a vaccine.

Babies start producing vitamin K after they start eating solid foods. 6 months However, at this point it may be too late and the bleeding may have reached the brain or intestines, requiring a blood transfusion or surgery, or in the worst case scenario, causing death.

of material The ingredients in this injection are primarily to make it liquid, making it easier to inject and absorb into the body, and it also contains a preservative called benzyl alcohol, which is also found in many other injections. Pharmaceuticals Ingredients that have an anesthetic effect and reduce discomfort at the injection site, such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and antipsychotics. There is no evidence that these ingredients are toxic. safety For newborns.

of Black Box Warning This is due to certain unfortunate cases where a patient suffering from severe bleeding who is being treated with anticoagulants is given a large amount of this injection via IV, which can cause anaphylaxis. This is not the case with babies, as the amount in their blood is very low and only small amounts are given to prevent deficiency bleeding.

Two patients experienced anaphylaxis from the infusion, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.04 to 11 per 10,000 doses. Only one non-fatal case of anaphylaxis has been reported in an infant in Turkey in 2014 after receiving a vitamin K injection. More than 4 million injections are given to newborns each year in the United States, but there have been no documented reports of anaphylaxis.

verdict

Vitamin K is not a vaccine and does not cause newborn deaths. It is given to babies when they show signs of vitamin K deficiency to prevent fatal bleeding into vital organs.
