July is National Minority Mental Health Month, and the Black Women’s Mental Health Institute will be hosting a conference to raise awareness.
The event is the 8th Annual Mental Health Equality Liberation Summit, which is scheduled to take place at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens on 11 July.
The summit will feature Black, Latinx, Asian, LGBTQIA+ and Indigenous speakers sharing their perspectives on the topic of mental health equity and culturally responsive mental health care, with the theme “Healing Justice and Collective Health.”
Dr. Nadia Richardson, founder and CEO of the Black Women’s Mental Health Institute, will open the public event.
Notable speakers include:
- Regina James, MD Vice Chair, Division of Diversity and Health Equity American Psychiatric Association
- Councilwoman LaTonya A. Tate, Chair of the Birmingham City Council’s 9th District Public Safety Committee
- Rep. Philip Ensler: Alabama House of Representatives, 74th District
- Dr. Norman H. Kim: Co-founder and President of the Institute for Anti-Racism and Equity in Mental Health
- Councilman Crystal N. Smitherman: Birmingham City Council, District 6
- Rex Reynolds, Alabama House of Representatives, 21st District
