if you If you’ve heard of natto, you’re not alone. Outside of traditional Japanese diets, many people don’t eat much (or at all) of the fermented soy product. But the food’s potential health benefits have led to a surge in popularity for the supplement nattokinase.

“Japan has one of the longest life expectancies in the world, and natto is widely considered one of the healthiest foods in Japan. The secret weapon for longevity” Kim YawitzRD: Of course, people are taking nattokinase supplements in hopes of similar longevity benefits.

Below, we explain what you need to know about nattokinase and whether it’s worth adding to your supplements.

What is Nattokinase?

In the late 1980s, Researchers isolated the enzyme from natto. This enzyme, called nattokinase, has been shown to break down fibrous material such as blood clots and is thought to be responsible for many of nattokinase’s health benefits.

“In theory, this could help reduce the risk of heart disease and atherosclerosis,” Yawitz says. “Today, many people take nattokinase supplements in the hope that they can improve their health without having to eat natto (which has a very unique taste and texture).”

Nattokinase supplements aim to maximize the benefits of natto, Chelsea Rae Bourgeois, RDN, LD.a study A study of nearly 30,000 participants over 16 years found that consumption of natto was associated with a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease in Japan.

In fact, research on natto itself is growing, with promising results. “Many people in Asia I believe that eating natto will help you live longer.Indeed, several studies support these claims,” Yawitz says. Large-scale survey in 2020 It has been found that adults who regularly eat natto are significantly less likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those who do not.

That being said, experts agree that more research is needed before any definite conclusions can be drawn about nattokinase.

Nattokinase is sold in capsule, powder and liquid form, and doses typically range from 2,000 to 7,000 fibrinolytic units, Yawitz says. Nattokinase may also be found in multi-ingredient products labeled as heart health supplements.

Do Nattokinase supplements have any health benefits?

“Nattokinase hasn’t been studied much in humans, so we don’t know if it’s worth taking as a supplement. So far, it appears to be safe and well-tolerated, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily effective,” Yautiz says.

Some studies suggest that nattokinase supplements may be helpful. Lowers cholesterol levels and Reduce the amount of plaque to the arteries. Nevertheless, these benefits Common Adults who are overweight, drink alcohol, or smoke; Taking a high dose“There There isn’t much evidence “These findings suggest that nattokinase may be beneficial in healthy adults at low risk for cardiovascular disease,” says Ray Bourgeois. he says.

What are the risks of nattokinase supplements?

Ray Bourgeois says it’s important to note that there is little to no research on nattokinase’s effects on people with various chronic diseases. The supplement may also dangerously lower blood pressure or worsen blood clotting disorders. “Before taking nattokinase supplements, talk to your doctor about the potential risks,” he says.

Nattokinase also has blood-thinning properties, so if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking blood-thinning medications, you might want to avoid taking the supplement, Yawitz says.

Should I take a nattokinase supplement?

Despite promising new scientific findings, experts don’t think you need to rush out and buy this supplement just yet.

“Until more human studies are done, I would recommend avoiding nattokinase supplements (unless, of course, your doctor recommends it),” Yawitz says. “Most men would probably be better served by adopting proven heart-healthy habits like eating plenty of fiber, limiting alcohol, being physically active, limiting added sugars, and getting an annual health check.”

The FDA does not regulate dietary supplements, and studies have not established a recommended dosage for nattokinase supplements, but if you like the taste of natto, consuming it with other foods is definitely a wise choice.Fermented foods Include it in your diet.

Again, always consult with your doctor or nutritionist before incorporating any new supplements into your routine.
