Those interested in health and wellness can participate in the Oklahoma State University Extension Master Wellness Volunteer Program and work with family and consumer science educators across the state.
Family and Consumer Sciences Volunteer Projects facilitated by Ohio State University Extension will help Oklahomans make informed decisions, improve their quality of life and address unique challenges that impact their families, farms, communities and economies, said Suzette Barta, community engagement coordinator for Ohio State University’s College of Education and Human Sciences (Extension, Engagement and Continuing Education).
“OSU Extension has a wealth of research-based information about healthy living that can make a difference in the lives of all Oklahomans,” Barta said. “Volunteers play a vital role in sharing information about safe and healthy cooking, diabetes prevention, exercise, mental health, financial planning and more. We want to build bridges to bring this valuable information to more people.”
Applicants selected for the Master Wellness Volunteer Program must be a new or current Master Family and Consumer Science Volunteer or a certified 4-H volunteer who has completed the Master FCS Volunteer Training. For more information, please visit the website.
The training involves 25 hours of instruction consisting of six hours of in-person orientation, six 90-minute Zoom lessons per week, training videos in five core subjects, and a five-hour internship. The in-person training will take place in Kingfisher County on Oct. 22.
Upon completion of training, Master Wellness Volunteers are encouraged to volunteer at least 25 hours over the next year to support or lead educational wellness activities in their county. Volunteers are required to participate in 10 hours of continuing education over the next year.
The program requires a $50 registration fee, which includes food at the training session on Oct. 22. Applications are available from Family and Consumer Science educators at OSU county Extension offices.
