Debates often make us think harder about what’s at stake, especially when it concerns the fate of the country we live in. So when we watched last week’s presidential debate, at least some of us thought we were watching two angry old men arguing without taking a clear stance. I’m talking, of course, about abortion.
Neither of these senior politicians had the moral integrity to assert the dignity of every unborn child without exception. It was a sad episode, but it should have also been a wake-up call that we need to get more serious in our fight to end the killing of innocent people.
A few years ago, Professor Charles Rice wrote about this in a document called “The Pro-Life Movement: A Spiritual Perspective,” and in his inimitable words he said to me, “Look, if you want to end this scourge, you need to focus on the Rosary.” This is a comment I’ll never forget, and of course, he was absolutely right.
Now, many years later, his words ring truer than ever. We followed his words and began praying the Rosary in front of a beautiful blessed statue of Our Lady of Fatima that someone gave us in our office. We then began our Our Lady of Life Campaign with prayers that also included the Rosary. And today, we are raising the Marian Blue Wave.
Katie Brown, national director of the American Federation for Life and leader of the Marian Blue Wave, wrote in a June 27 internal memo that the power of the rosary is needed to overcome evil.
On Monday, MBW launched its “Summer Prayer Challenge,” calling on more than 10,000 MBW prayer partners to pray every month through November for states considering putting abortion in their state constitutions.
The state for July is Florida. Over the next few months, the following states will be featured as intent: We have been promoting this heavily on social media and in the news, and have written letters to each of the bishops in Florida asking them to participate. Remaining States [and their proposed laws] You must follow it.
Florida – Protects the “right” to abortion until viability and when necessary to protect a woman’s health.
Maryland – Guarantees the right to “reproductive freedom,” including the ability to prevent, continue, or terminate one’s own pregnancy.
South Dakota – States that the government can only ban abortions after the third trimester, unless it is necessary to protect the life or physical or mental health of the mother.
Colorado – Repeals previous constitutional amendments that recognized the right to abortion and prohibited the use of state funds to provide abortion insurance.
NEW YORK – Voters were supposed to decide whether to amend the state constitution to add language about pregnancy and personal freedoms. But a state court ruled in May that the measure couldn’t move forward because lawmakers made procedural errors in a previous round of approval. The ballot measure was put to the vote again and approved. The measure would add protections against future threats to a state where abortion is already legal up to 24 weeks after fertilization.
Reflecting on Professor Rice’s profound words from a few years ago, we ask you to spread the message that the Marian Blue Wave, focused on the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is touching hearts and saving babies.
Feminists scream that any restrictions on abortion mean a war on women, but we respond by focusing on the wonderful lives of all women, beginning with Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, who is also our Mother.
Let us always remember that by praying the Rosary and asking the Lord for His help as we meditate on each sacred mystery, we are engaging in a spiritual act that will ultimately bring an end to the killing of innocent people.
