The Woodlands, Texas – The Woodlands Behavioral Health & Wellness Center is a unique clinic that uses a multimodal integrated team approach to treat the whole client and their significant other, focusing on parent counseling, family therapy and marital therapy in addition to individual therapy. The center recently announced it will be hosting parent workshops starting July 17.
The four-week program begins on July 17th.
The four-week workshop, “Common Mistakes Parents Make When Sending Their Kids to College and How to Avoid Them,” is aimed at parents sending their children to college. The workshop will be held every Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the center, 2700 Research Forest Dr. #130 in The Woodlands. Certified college guidance counselor Jeanie McCusker, PhD, LPC, CSC, will be the facilitator. The cost of the entire workshop is $260.
The workshops will cover various aspects of parenting and the mistakes that come with it.
Underestimating the challenges of college – College students face a variety of challenges, including social adjustment, mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, and time management issues. Being aware of these potential obstacles can help parents better support their children as they navigate this new environment.
Ineffective communication and not allowing children to make mistakes – It’s natural for parents to want to protect their children from failure, but shielding them from all failures prevents them from learning valuable life lessons. This workshop coaches parents on allowing their children to experience difficulties and find their own solutions, which helps build resilience and problem-solving skills.
Ignore available resources – The University offers a wide range of services, including academic support, mental health resources, student organizations, etc. The workshop will encourage parents to become familiar with these resources and provide the support their children need when they face difficulties.
Supporting students with ADHD, ADD, anxiety, depression and learning plans – For students with these issues, the transition to college can be especially difficult. This workshop will teach parents how to encourage their children to become aware of mental health resources available on campus, such as counseling services, and how to advocate for themselves in academic and mental health settings, helping children manage their own needs.
“Be prepared to confidently support your child as they pursue college. Our workshop series will help you understand the challenges your child faces, teach effective communication strategies, and introduce you to important resources. Learn how to balance guidance and independence to ensure your child’s academic and personal success. Don’t miss this opportunity to empower your child’s college journey and strengthen your parent-child relationship,” said a representative from the center.
