Located in the bustling Jinjiang district of Chengdu, China Nihao Hotel is set to open as a boutique yet affordable hotel aimed at a younger generation of international travellers who prioritise convenience but are also keen on contemporary design. With cinematic décor, the hotel’s name is a Chinese greeting for “hello” and a warm, welcoming feel permeates the entire interior. Covered in cultural symbols and painted in distinctive bold colours, the hotel is Tokishu Design Group We have created a hotel that is truly intended to welcome all guests.

Ni Hao Hotel's modern interior features red tile walls, a curved reception desk, digital kiosks and spherical pendant lights. In the background, Chinese characters are elegantly displayed on illuminated signboards.

From the moment you step inside, you’ll be greeted by a space that embodies China’s journey to blend tradition with an evolving modern spirit. Vermilion Zhou Design Group has created a graphic fusion of China’s cultural heritage through the use of color, typography, signage and symbolism, an approach the hotel playfully calls “punk wellness.”

The red-themed, modern rooms at NI HAO Hotel feature round light fixtures and illuminated Chinese signage, while the space is filled with contemporary furnishings and decorative elements.

Guests can enjoy a variety of wellness amenities but must check in themselves at the self-check-in area in the hotel lobby.

At the NI HAO Hotel, two children interact with a red pixelated wall display; a girl reaches for the tiles while a boy stands nearby and looks on. The floor is part red, part plaid.

The atmosphere is more like a restaurant or cafeteria than a formal hotel, albeit with a high level of design detail. Each room exudes an upscale feel, with chic choices in lighting, seating, signage and tile work. Designed to accommodate the limited staffing of a budget hotel while keeping staff interaction to a minimum, the hotel instead focuses on providing guests with amenities such as meeting areas and workspaces, reflecting the tourist rather than vacationer crowd the hotel is targeting.

NI HAO Hotel's modern interior space features glossy brown tiled walls, red circular light fixtures, frosted glass doors with a round design, and red chairs with circular cutouts around light-coloured tables.

A modern wall art piece featuring two stacked glossy burgundy spheres in a reddish circular frame is displayed on a textured beige wall above the brown tiles of the NI HAO Hotel.

Guests will notice a repeating motif of the number eight – also known as the “gourd”, this traditional Chinese symbol represents blessings, good fortune and safety for travellers.

A man sits reading a book in the modern cafe of the NI HAO hotel. The cafe has red chairs and a stylish round counter. The window offers a view of the street outside with trees and parked scooters.

The wide-open accordion doors offer views of the bustling streetscape of Donghuazheng Street in Chengdu’s Jinjiang District, providing an interactive experience during your stay at NI HAO Hotel.

Decorated in red and white, the cafe features a counter stocked with fruits, drinks and snacks - signs in Chinese above the counter list fruit, yogurt, juices and more - and the cosy ambience makes it feel like a charming extension of the nearby NI HAO Hotel.

Guests are greeted by numerous signboards bearing slogans that are a “very Chinese expression,” subverting the design of traditional reception and lobby areas.

The modern interior of the restaurant in the NI HAO Hotel features red and pink tones, a curved counter, circular lighting, wall shelves decorated with red accessories and large white hanging lanterns with red lettering.

This modern retro-themed diner features red chairs, a counter and an illuminated sign with Chinese characters hanging from the ceiling. Located inside the trendy Ni Hao Hotel, the lighting creates a cosy atmosphere.

Located inside the NI HAO Hotel, this chic indoor café features modern round tables, red chairs and soft lighting. Earth-toned walls and furniture create a warm, cozy atmosphere.

The images show a seating area with maroon and grey upholstered chairs, some of which are surrounded by curved panels and topped with patterned cushions, with a tiled wall and a sign with Chinese text in the background, suggesting this could be the cozy lounge of the Ni Hao Hotel.

Visible through the glass doors of No. 8 at the NI HAO Hotel is a modern seating area with textured brown tiled walls, red leather booths and small tables.

This hotel prioritizes simplicity and affordable comfort over luxury.

The hotel’s public areas and rooms are designed to encourage intentional and spontaneous interactions, making every “hello” feel personal and meaningful. What’s interesting is the designer’s declaration that “extroverts and introverts alike can find a comfortable space to settle in if they return to their basic accommodation needs.”

A cozy corner at NI HAO Hotel features a cushioned bench next to a bedside table with a circular base, beneath which hangs an elegant wall art piece of a stylised bird.

The small, modern rooms at NI HAO Hotel are decorated in a red and beige colour scheme and feature wall-mounted desks, single lights, power outlets, mugs and partial grey sofas.

The rooms at NI HAO Hotel are equipped with work desks, cushioned chairs, patterned sofas, side tables and decorative murals of snake-like creatures above the sofas.

Vermilion Zhou Design Group integrates cultural elements with traditional symbols and motifs expressed in a graphic way, taking a playful approach across the walls of public spaces, in this case the guest rooms.

The modern bathroom at NI HAO hotel is decorated in beige and brown and features a lighted wall mirror, a towel holder and a small table with two decorative bowls. The door is ajar.

Geometric doors open into a modern room with red walls and a shelf holding two bottles, reflecting the elegant design of NI HAO Hotel.

Two patterned mugs, tea bags, a red and beige electric kettle and cup coasters are placed on a red desk, creating a cozy corner reminiscent of the warm atmosphere of NI HAO Hotel.

The NI HAO Hotel is scheduled to open this summer, with pricing and availability yet to be determined.

what: Nihao Hotel
where: No. 28 Donghuazheng Street, Jinjiang District, Chengdu
how much: to be decided
highlight: A bold, graphic design language permeates the hotel’s public areas, while rooms exude a more calm and minimalist vibe. The hotel’s breakfast area, restaurant and bar particularly shine with a retro aesthetic. Centrally located along Donghuazheng Street in Jinjiang District, the hotel is close to shopping venues such as Taikoo Li Mall, as well as numerous parks, shopping streets, shrines and traditional museums, making NI HAO the perfect base for exploring the city on foot.
Design drawing: For something more contemporary, check out the Chengdu Museum of Contemporary Art and Chengdu Tianfu Art Museum on the outskirts, or further afield, enjoy hotpot in a scenic setting at the Garden Hot Pot restaurant. The Chengdu Natural History Museum, designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners and CSWADI, opened last year to architectural acclaim and is one of many internationally-led projects rapidly transforming Chengdu’s skyline.
Book it: NI HAO HOTEL (Opening soon)
