Nikki Spencer, from Wimborough, near Dereham, worked in the finance industry for more than 15 years but found herself “burnt out” and suffering from several ailments during lockdown.
This prompted her to retrain in naturopathic and nutritional medicine and start her own business, The Root Cause.
Naturopathy is a form of treatment that uses natural remedies such as herbs, exercise, diet, lifestyle planning, and nutritional counseling to help the body recover from trauma that manifests as health problems.
Spencer treats patients suffering from conditions including acne, polycystic ovarian syndrome, gut health, fatigue and hormone imbalances by creating individualized plans to tackle the “root cause” of the problem rather than “putting a bandaid on the symptoms”.

“After years of working as a corporate accountant in a busy and competitive environment, I found my life extremely stressful,” she said.

“I had zero tolerance for anything even remotely annoying, I was working long hours and not being productive, doing half the work and half the housework as a mother.
“My health and happiness were suffering. I suffered chronic back pain and terrible daily headaches and was unable to enjoy everyday life.”
She found the world of health information “overwhelming” and began to seek out more natural remedies.

After noticing a change in herself, she qualified as a health coach and naturopathic nutritional therapist and set up a tranquil clinic in rural Norfolk to help others on their health journeys.
“After five years of training to be an accountant and 15 years working for the same company and earning a decent wage, this was not an easy decision.
“But it was born out of a desire to find a more balanced and healthy way of living and to help others do the same.”
Spencer works with each client for at least six weeks to get to know them in depth and ensure the plan is the best fit for them.
“Health concerns can take years to develop, and resolving them isn’t always a quick fix,” she said.
“If a client has special requirements and wants a bespoke package, I can definitely cater for that, because everyone is unique and no two people are the same.”
