Going to the gym and taking different types of exercise classes can take a toll on your wallet, and here’s another example of that phenomenon.
A woman named Hannah posted a video to TikTok telling viewers about her shock when she looked up the prices of exercise classes after moving to the US from Australia.
She told viewers: “Well, I’ve just got off the phone with a quote from a Pilates studio. In Australia I used to go to Pilates six days a week. I loved Pilates. I’ve never been a big gym goer. I wish I could be, but I just don’t have the motivation to go to the gym and train on my own.”
Hannah said that gyms in Australia charged $35 a week ($140 a month) for unlimited Pilates classes, but when she contacted a Pilates studio near her home after returning to the US, she was told it would cost $250 a month for unlimited classes.

She continued, “I had heard it was cheap, so I said, ‘No,’ and she said, ‘That would be $250 a month, plus a membership fee of $150.'”
Studio staff told Hannah they would halve the starter fee to $75, but Hannah was still upset about the arrangement, saying, “No wonder women are disliked here.”

Hannah said: “Pilates has been the greatest blessing for me – with just a little bit of sweat and effort I’ve seen such a difference to my body. It’s not really effort, it’s hard work, but it’s fun and affordable in Australia, so I thought, why here?”
She continued, “When they said $250 a month, I seriously considered quitting. Is that even a luxury? The sad thing is, these things are so important to our mental health and people have to start making decisions.”
Hannah concluded the video by saying, “What are we doing? Guys. $250 a month? Please…”
