La Mecha Contemporary’s new solo exhibition, “Breath Body Water,” features the work of artist Tauna Cole.
The exhibition will have an opening reception on Thursday, June 27th from 6-9pm and will close on July 20th.
Cole combines yoga with her art practice.
She will perform a performance combining breathing and painting at La Mecha Contemporary, 3803 Frutas Ave., on July 20 at 2 p.m.
A news release states: “Over time, the embodied practice of visualizing her breath while meditating helped her develop a new formal language that was quite different from her years of representational painting and drawing. Meditation taught her to work on conscious and subconscious levels, to develop greater trust in intuitive processes, and to rely more on the intelligence of her body.”
It adds: “The works in this exhibition are the result of a physical practice, seeking information through the intelligence of the body and developing imagery through the lens of trained artists who integrate their spiritual lives into their artistic practice.”
Cole received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Boise State University and his Master of Fine Arts in Studio Painting from New Mexico State University.
Cole was a professor of art at New Mexico State University where she taught studio classes and introductory drawing and visual concepts courses. She recently retired from New Mexico State University and now spends her time in her studio and with her family, including her husband, Raul Doane, a high school art teacher, and their son, Lowell Doane.
Cole is actively involved in community activities, volunteering at the Fountain Theatre in Las Cruces, New Mexico, serving on the board of directors for the Doña Ana Arts Council, and is a current member of Border Artists.
She received her 200-hour yoga training certification in June 2016.
Gallery hours are Saturday from noon to 5pm, but La Mecha will also be open for a Final Thursday event.
