Cleveland Clinic and app development company FitNow, Inc. have launched the Cleveland Clinic Diet App, which offers health and diet advice based on evidence-based nutrition science and clinical success combined with a comprehensive food and fitness tracker.
The app provides personalized, guided support with input from Cleveland Clinic health experts to help users make lasting changes to their lifestyle and eating habits to achieve better health and well-being.
“We know that health is about more than just weight, and our goal with the Cleveland Clinic Diet App is to go beyond the number on the scale and address each individual’s health status and goals,” says Julia Zumpano, RD, LD, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Human Nutrition, who helped design the app’s program. “We aim to help individuals overcome barriers and make lasting improvements to their health. We consider each individual’s needs and preferences to not only look better, but above all, feel better.”
The app also offers a series of curated courses from experts in nutrition, endocrinology, metabolism, heart health, digestive health, weight management and mental health. Additionally, the app is powered by FitNow’s easy-to-use tracking system, which allows users to record what they eat by scanning nutrition facts labels, taking photos or recording with audio.
The app allows users to choose between two tracks.
- Bodyguard Plan – Designed to provide a balanced intake of essential nutrients, this course emphasizes careful monitoring of a variety of macronutrients and sugar intake to promote stable energy levels and increased vitality.
- HeartSmart Plan – Based on the insights of Cleveland Clinic’s world-renowned authority on heart care, this plan is designed to improve cardiovascular health for those who have been diagnosed with heart disease, are concerned about their family history or want to make lifestyle changes to protect their heart.
The Cleveland Clinic Diet app was developed in collaboration with FitNow, a leading mobile health and wellness app developer and makers of the popular weight loss app, Lose It!
“We’re excited to combine Cleveland Clinic’s expert experience and content with our proven behavior change platform,” said Eric Puidokas, managing director and chief product officer at FitNow. “This winning combination ensures users are guided every step of the way as they work toward their personal health goals.”
“For most people, one of the biggest challenges is figuring out how to not only manage but maintain their weight, nutrition and health goals,” says Zumpano. “We know that getting healthy involves a lot of factors, so our goal with this app is to guide users step-by-step through the process.”
To support you and give you peace of mind throughout the process, Cleveland Clinic plans are created by health experts without bias, “fads” or rigid nutritional regimens. The plans include:
- Relatable, easy-to-understand content from health and medical writers for every stage of your health journey
- Food search and recommendation engine with billions of food entries
- AI-powered voice-to-text recognition voice log
- Image logging with proprietary machine learning algorithms that detect individual foods from whole meal images
- High Speed Barcode Scanning and Recognition Software
“Our goal was to launch the most accurate and quickest audio recording of meals,” said Will Lowe, PhD, lead data scientist at FitNow, who worked with a team of data scientists, product developers, designers and engineers to provide audio recording within the Cleveland Clinic Diet app. “This works in conjunction with our nutrition label and barcode scanning, and capturing photos of meals through Snap It to Track It. So far, audio recording in the Cleveland Clinic Diet app has achieved very high accuracy in detecting foods and portions. We think this is a game changer for people who want to log their meals more easily.”
The Cleveland Clinic Diet App won a Gold Award in the Spring 2024 Digital Health Awards for excellence in the Mobile Application category.
The Cleveland Clinic Diet app is available for a 7-day free trial on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
