Christina Cuomo

Cristina Cuomo: You were appointed Chairman of Southampton Hospital Foundation earlier this year, can you tell us a bit about your background?

Julia McCormack: As a child, I spent summers in Southampton and am now fortunate to live here year-round. My father was a physician, so I have always had a strong emphasis on healthcare. My career has focused on the intersection of medical research, education, and advancing community life. I have served as director of both major and major gifts teams at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the Concur Cancer Foundation (formerly the ASCO Foundation) in Alexandria, Virginia.

CC: You also worked at Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Conn. What inspires you most about working with young women and nurturing their incredible abilities?

James: Women give from the heart. When it comes to philanthropy, a lot of a young person’s interest is developed in adolescence. It comes from the classroom and from their own experiences in the world. We also know that girls perform better when they are with other girls in the classroom and on the playing field. I’ve seen time and time again how that plays out in adulthood. It’s interesting to me how many people who live in the East End went to Miss Porter’s and how enthusiastic and active they are in life.

CC: You seem to be resonating with women in this community by appealing to things that are important to them: self-care and education.

James: Absolutely. We’re doing a series called “Summer of Wellness.” On June 22nd, we’ll have a fitness experience led by Isaac Boots with a program called “Torch’d by Isaac Boots” at the wine stand at Wölffer Estate. Then on June 29th, we’ll have yoga at Mecox Bay Dairy. On July 13th, we’ll have a tennis clinic at the new Racquet Lounge in Southampton. The final activity in the series will be an event called DanceBody on August 10th at DanceBody studios in Bridgehampton. On July 11th, we’ll have our 4th Annual East Hampton Emergency Department Luncheon in Maidstone. Our guest speaker this year will be Bobbi Brown. Our 66th Summer Party is Saturday, August 3rd.

CC: Can you give us an update on the Stony Brook Medicine Easthampton Off-Campus Emergency Department?

James: Yes! Construction is scheduled to be completed in the fall as planned, with the ED expected to open in late spring.

CC: What types of treatments will be offered in this new emergency department?

James: The facility will feature a dedicated resuscitation room, cardiac monitoring capabilities in all examination rooms, rapid treatment rooms for general, paediatric, obstetrics-gynaecology and eye patients, two isolation rooms, MRI, CT and X-ray rooms, an ambulance for transport to hospital, rooftop solar panels, rainwater harvesting gardens and native plantings to reduce environmental impact.

CC: What do you love most about living in Southampton?

James: Every morning I walk my dog in the Village, and I also love taking long drives to Montauk early in the morning because there’s nothing more beautiful than watching the sun rise over Montauk.
