The event will help raise awareness and support for families with loved ones living with mental health issues
The weekend’s weather meant sunshine was obscured by clouds on Sunday morning, but that didn’t stop walkers from taking part in the event which took place in a Surrey park.
Emotions BC held its second annual Mental Wellness Walk on Sunday (June 23), bringing two- and four-legged walkers together to Surry Bend Regional Park.
The walk is also a fundraiser and helps raise awareness and support for people who have loved ones with mental health issues.
“There’s clearly a gap in emotional support for families, particularly families and caregivers who have a loved one with mental health issues,” said Nicole Taylor, founder and executive director of Emotions BC.
Working to provide those caregivers with barrier-free access to support, or to make sure they know what support is available, is part of Emotions BC’s work and the aim of the walk, she said.
“Sometimes it’s about being more effective in relationships rather than being reactive… We all have experiences, so we share the skills that we have.”
Attendees walked the park’s trail loop before enjoying interactive booths offering local community resources, live entertainment, popcorn and a light lunch.
