On International Yoga Day today, actress Niyati Fatnani, who has been practising yoga since she was a child, shares how yoga has transformed her life.
Talking about her beginnings in yoga, Niyati says, “I was into yoga from my school days. I was also passionate about dance, so I used to focus on stretching as well. But over the years, I have learnt a lot more about yoga and feel that yoga is not just about asanas, but also pranayama and meditation. For the last five years, I have been deeply involved in meditation. My mother also practices meditation and she has her own company.”
She added: “It’s become a tradition in our household to sit and meditate together for 30 minutes in the evening.”
There are many asanas in yoga, each of which requires dedication and practice. She shares how her practice helped her overcome the more difficult asanas: “When I started yoga, Chakrasana and Naukasana were difficult for me to practice. Now, after years of practice, I have improved, but still, backbends are sometimes difficult and important. Backbends are for building confidence in life and forward bending are for building surrender.”
She is currently in Romania shooting for Khatron Ke Khiladi 16 and even there she does not miss out on her breathing exercises. “Yoga helps me calm my nerves. There is a lot of acceptance and calmness within me now. Even in KKK, it helps me a lot to do breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom which helps me calm myself down before doing any stunt. So, I do it before taking on any difficult task,” said the Nazar actress.
