The company’s Vitality program is known for encouraging members to eat right and exercise using Apple Watch perks.
John Hancock has added a discount on Prenuvo full-body MRI scans to its Vitality wellness incentive program.
Life insurance policyholders aged 18 or older who reside outside of New York State and who participate in the Vitality program and complete a medical screening can get the scan for $500 less than the regular price of $2,499.
Prenuvo says the scan takes less than an hour and can detect conditions such as aneurysms and cysts early.
What it means: Some customers may have additional information readily available about conditions that may affect their longevity.
scan: Prenuvo is a venture capital-backed company with clinics in Chicago, Dallas, New York, Los Angeles and several other markets.
Most health insurance companies still don’t cover the scans.
Skeptics suggest the scans could lead to unnecessary treatment and may be useless for people at average risk of developing diseases such as cancer.
John Hancock’s Strategy: John Hancock, a subsidiary of Boston-based Manulife, is known for using its Vitality program, a program developed by an outside vendor, to encourage members to eat healthy, exercise and get regular medical checkups through a variety of games and prizes, including an Apple Watch.
John Hancock is already pushing the boundaries of wellness programming by offering Vitality members access to Grail’s Galeri cancer screening blood test.
John Hancock is applying the same approach to its Prenuvo testing that it used in its Galleri testing, which means it will produce aggregate results that don’t affect individual customers’ coverage or premiums.
John Hancock announced that it is the first life insurer to offer insureds a full-body MRI discount.
John Hancock does not plan to report the value of the pre-Nuvo tests as income to the IRS, but policyholders should consult with their tax advisors about the tax implications, the company said.
