Chef and producer Keano Moju has released his first cookbook. AfriCali: Recipes from my Jikoni The watch will be available at S&S/Simon Element on August 13, 2024 for $35. delicious As the platform’s first Black female producer, Kiano finds much of her culinary identity in her Kenyan and Nigerian background, with influences from her California roots and global travels. Her debut book encourages home cooks to explore African-inspired and globally influenced cuisine accented with California’s bounty of ingredients. With over 85 vibrant, modern recipes, this inventive collection beautifully showcases Kiano’s passion for her African traditions and California lifestyle. She seamlessly combines these cultures with familiar techniques, flavors, and ingredients, all of which define the way Kiano cooks, cleverly named “Africari.”
Kiano was born in Oakland, California to a Maasai-Kenyan mother and a Nigerian father, both of whom moved to the United States in adulthood. Inspired by a love of chemistry inherited from his biochemist father, Kiano gravitated to his mother in the kitchen and became intrigued by the science of cooking and the culture that surrounds it. From spending several summers on his grandparents’ ranch in Kenya to attending cooking classes throughout his adolescence, Kiano’s love of food was rooted at an early age. After earning a master’s degree in publishing from the University of the Arts London, Kiano began his career in food media. Hearing the lack of diversity in the industry, he was determined to create space for more cultures and voices. While working as a video producer for BuzzFeed, deliciousKiano has shifted its production from majority-oriented cKiano focuses on a wide range of recipes from different cultures. In late 2019, she founded Zikoni Studios, a full-service production company that has produced cooking videos and commercials for industry giants such as Food Network, Fox Studios, Tastemade, and the United States Department of Agriculture. Kiano also founded Zikoni Recipe Archive, a non-profit organization that documents the traditions of African and Black cooks and promotes and celebrates their vibrant food cultures. It is a culinary guide to African and Black cuisines, curating resources to promote and preserve these food identities for future generations. Kiano’s work and Africa, Kiano creates space for underrepresented voices and cultures in food media, challenging existing norms and promoting inclusivity.
AfriCali: Recipes from my Jikoni Here’s how Kiano cooks, all inspired by her travels around the world, her time growing up in California, and what’s in her kitchen today.Jikoni Kiano means kitchen in Swahili. Kiano’s recipes offer a glimpse into her kitchen, where she puts a twist on beloved family recipes, creates new creations that combine flavors from across Africa with traditional California dishes, and embraces culinary innovation, accessible and affordable ingredients, and the celebration of multicultural foods. Kiano introduces readers to African cooking, where she draws on tradition and experience while intentionally creating new flavors. Africa It will be published by Simon Elements, a division of Simon & Schuster, and will be released on August 13, 2024.
