Washington, June 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — George Washington University (GW) and José Andrés, renowned chef and founder of GW’s Global Food Institute (GFI), today announced Stacey Dean He became the institute’s first Carbonell family executive director.

Leveraging more than 20 years of national expertise in food policy and agriculture, Stacey Dean Dean is poised to take the Institute’s impact to the next level. Her distinguished tenure includes her most recent role as Deputy Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), where she was instrumental in expanding nutrition assistance programs to communities in need. Prior to her role at USDA, Dean served as Vice President for Food Assistance Policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, where she led her team in developing and implementing more effective food assistance policies.

“Under the leadership of Stacey Dean“USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service’s innovative and forward-thinking work to advance nutrition security and get healthy foods on dinner tables and in school lunchrooms across the nation has resulted in some of the most significant milestones in food and nutrition in decades,” the Secretary of Agriculture said. Tom Vilsack“Stacey’s work enriches American families and she will continue to do so in her new role.”

“Stacey brings deep knowledge and experience to help the Global Food Institute reshape the future of our global food systems,” GW’s president said. Ellen M. Grunberg“Her strategic vision, proven leadership and passion for serving others will be invaluable as we begin our work to address some of the most pressing food and agriculture issues of our time.”

As Executive Director, Dean will advance the Institute’s mission to change the world through the power of food. Her role will include expanding the Institute’s strategic initiatives, fostering new opportunities, programs and partnerships, and shepherding innovative solutions that position the Institute as a central force in national and global food issues.

“The enormity of the challenges facing the global food system calls for a passionate leader like Stacey, with a deep understanding of the problems and the drive to create change,” said Global Food Institute founder and chef José Andrés. “I’m thrilled to be working with her as we usher in a new era of impact for the Institute.”

Upon his appointment, which he will take up in late July, Dean shared his vision for the institute’s future: “I am honored to join the World Food Institute at this critical time. Together, we will pave the way for innovative solutions to food insecurity, malnutrition, climate change, and the many global challenges we face. Our joint efforts will make the aspirations for a more equitable and sustainable food system a reality.”
