Governor Ron DeSantis Approved legislation (HB7021) would amend the state’s Baker and Marchman Acts and invest millions of dollars in mental health and substance abuse services.

FBHA and other health groups applauded the bill’s passage through Congress. Last SessionThe bill, signed by Gov. DeSantis on Friday, will allocate $50 million to the Department of Children and Families for services to help people struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues.
The bill relaxes the ability to obtain compulsory services under the Baker Act, making it easier for police to request compulsory testing if necessary. It also makes other changes, such as prohibiting courts from forcibly placing developmentally disabled people in state facilities under the Marchman Act and more easily allowing witnesses to appear virtually for hearings.

The new regulations will come into effect on July 1st.
