The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is currently accepting applications.
Local produce is available at local farmers markets such as the Jefferson Street Farmers Market in Burlington (Thursday nights), Central Park in Fort Madison on Monday nights, and McMillan Park in Mount Pleasant on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings.
The nutrition program will provide eligible seniors with a check totaling $50 to spend at participating farmers markets and roadside stands.
The money can be used to purchase fresh Iowa-grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey.
Eligible individuals can apply to receive farmers market vouchers through the local agency serving their county.
To learn more and request an application, contact your local Department of Aging serving your county by calling (866) 468-7887.
Participants who received a voucher last year will automatically be sent an application for 2024.
Applicants must be 60 years of age or older at the time of application.
They must live within the Milestones Regional Senior Citizens Agency service area and earn no more than $27,861 a year for single-person households and $37,814 a year for two-person households.
Vouchers may also be provided to Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) recipients, guidelines for which are available on the department’s website.
