A video of 85-year-old actress Helen doing Pilates at the gym has recently gone viral. Helen spoke about her motivation: “I’ve been exercising all my life – dancing, going to health clubs, yoga – but when I wasn’t exercising in my 80s I realised my balance wasn’t always right so I started using a walking stick. Now that I’m 85 I’ve started exercising again and feel that Pilates is good for my health.
It’s great. I train at least five days a week for an hour. At first, my trainer and his team focus on flexibility exercises, and then I add in some strength exercises.
The actress now recommends Pilates to her friends and family: “Pilates is suitable for people of all ages, especially older adults. The controlled, gentle exercises have done wonders for my muscles, balance, core, flexibility and strength. I usually feel happier afterwards,” she says.
Helen makes sure to eat her meals on time, with breakfast consisting of fruit, toast, eggs and cheese. Lunch is usually a variety of vegetables and non-veg foods to add protein, and dinner is almost always a light snack. “I do intermittent fasting for about 12-14 hours. My favourite foods are my mum’s recipes, especially Burmese kaw sui and prawn lat thaw and paya from Galaxy Apartment,” she says.
The actress, a travel enthusiast, added that she can’t wait to explore the world again. “I want to go to Scotland and China. Scotland is beautiful and I’m looking forward to spending time with my family and I’ve never been to China,” she said.
