Pilates focuses on total body stability, mobility and strength, which is achieved through breathing and core strengthening.

Pilates Pilates is a great way to get moving. Whether you’re looking to tone your body, recover from an injury, or simply try a new training program, Pilates is here to help. Pilates is uniquely designed to accommodate every skill level, health need, and concern. You can try it out by joining a studio, or you can do it in the comfort of your own space. Learn more about Pilates, its different types, and which one is right for you.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise that focuses on total body stability, mobility and strength. This is done through breathing and core engagement. It aims to strengthen muscles while improving posture and core strength. Most people use Pilates to improve balance, strengthen the whole body, improve the mind-body connection and postural imbalances.

Types of Pilates

The two most common types of Pilates are: Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates.

Mat Pilates

Often confused with yoga, Mat Pilates typically involves consistent, controlled movements on a mat, using your own body weight as resistance, making it considered the true foundation of Pilates and accessible to any fitness enthusiast with just a mat.

The simplicity of mat pilates makes it suitable for all ages and fitness levels, although some people like to add fitness accessories like weights and bands to add an extra level of challenge to their workout.

  • The benefits of mat pilates
  • No special equipment required
  • Great for beginners
  • Improves flexibility, mobility, posture and strength
  • Can provide a basic introduction to Pilates movements

Reformer Pilates

Instead of a mat, you use a machine called a Reformer, which has a sliding base and stable platform with pulleys and straps, and springs to provide resistance to your movements. Try it!With this form of Pilates, the Reformer allows you to perform certain exercises without putting undue strain on the injured body part, making it easier to modify exercises.

  • Benefits of Reformer Pilates
  • Modifiable for injuries and joint problems
  • Fun and versatile
  • This machine supports effective training without putting strain on the body.
  • The Reformer teaches you the correct form
