5 essential vitamins for summer

This summer has been one of the hottest on record, which can have a detrimental effect on health. Adults, the elderly and children alike feel fatigued easily and their skin suffers from dehydration. These problems are exacerbated if our diet lacks essential vitamins.

According to the Supradyn Nutrition Survey 2023, 85% of doctors and nutritionists in India believe that a typical daily diet meets only 70% of the body’s nutritional requirements. Deficiencies, especially in vitamins and minerals, can be addressed with multivitamin supplements. Over 80% of the Indian population faces the risk of deficiencies in calcium, vitamins A, B12, folate, and B3. Individuals often assume that their diet provides them with enough nutrients and underestimate the importance of monitoring their vitamin levels. However, this assumption is not always accurate as micronutrient deficiencies can occur even in a balanced diet.

This is a misconception across India, despite the vast variety of cuisines and dietary habits across states in India. Due to this, people experience low energy levels, weakened immunity, and become sensitive to extreme heat and cold. Therefore, you should take your time in choosing the right multivitamin supplement to ensure adequate nutrition. This will help boost your immunity, increase your energy levels, and help you adapt to weather changes.

Here are five important vitamins that can protect your health from the negative health effects of heat this summer.

Vitamin A: The summer sun can be very strong and damaging to your skin. Vitamin A protects your skin by promoting skin cell turnover, replacing sun-damaged cells with new ones, and helps prevent sunburn. Keep in mind that the recommended daily intake of Vitamin A for adults aged 19-64 is 1000 µg for men and 840 µg for women.

Vitamin B: According to Dr. Nikhil Bangare, medical director of Bayer’s consumer health division and author of the study, “B complex vitamins are essential for a variety of bodily functions, including nutrient metabolism, DNA repair and energy production. They help convert food into fuel, giving you energy during the summer4. The daily requirements for vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12 are 1.8 mg, 2.5 mg, 18 mg, 2.4 mg and 2.5 µg/day, respectively.”

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from UV rays, minimizing damage. It supports collagen synthesis, helping to maintain skin health. It also aids in the absorption of iron 7, which is essential for maintaining water balance and preventing dehydration. The recommended daily intake of vitamin C for adults is 65 mg for women and 80 mg for men.

Vitamin E: A well-known antioxidant, Vitamin E plays an important role in reducing sun damage. By neutralizing free radicals, it boosts the skin’s natural defenses against UV rays and may reduce the risk of sunburn. Vitamin E also contributes to the repair process, speeding up healing after sun exposure. Adults typically need about 7.5-10 mg per day.

Vitamin K: Vitamin K plays an important role in blood clotting and tissue repair, reducing muscle stiffness and pain from any micro-injuries and speeding up recovery. An average adult needs about 55 mcg of Vitamin K per day.

Don’t let hidden nutritional deficiencies jeopardize your health. Talk to your doctor today to learn about the benefits of incorporating vitamin supplements into your routine. This proactive step will not only optimize your summer health, but it will also contribute to your overall health year-round.
