By the numbers

1.58 million people facing severe food insecurity in southern Angola

311.5 tons of food distributed

Six-month (June-November 2024) net capital requirement of US$4.9 million

Support 20,556 people in March and April 2024

Operational Updates

Drought Countermeasures

• Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM): WFP screened 2,433 children aged 6-59 months and 247 pregnant and lactating women and girls (PBWGs) in Kunene Region. A total of 1,582 children were diagnosed with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and enrolled in the WFP-supported CMAM programme. Additionally, a total of 73 PBWGs were enrolled in the WFP programme. To address the nutritional requirements of these beneficiaries, WFP distributed 10.3 tonnes of ready-to-use supplementary food (RUSF).

• RUSF Distribution: A total of 87.7 tonnes of RUSF have been distributed to health facilities in Cunene, Benguela and Cuanza Sul provinces. Over the next three months, approximately 12,794 infants and children aged 6 to 59 months diagnosed with MAM will be replenished. These replenishments are crucial given that the El Niño drought is expected to lead to an increase in MAM cases.

Capacity Building – Nutrition

• WFP, in collaboration with World Vision and with the support of the World Health Organization and the Brazilian Embassy, organized an awareness event in Luanda on the health and nutrition of women and children in Angola, which included a performance of “6º Andar” by the Amazonas group. The event provided a valuable opportunity to showcase WFP’s projects in Angola focusing on maternal and child health and nutrition.

Supporting refugees in Lunda Norte

• Refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo living in Lobua refugee settlement in Lunda-Norte province continue to rely on WFP food assistance to meet their basic food and nutrition needs. A total of 6,107 refugees received food baskets containing maize flour, pulses, vegetable oil and salt in March and April 2024. WFP distributed 213.5 tonnes of food items. Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (VAM)

• Post Distribution Monitoring Survey (PDM): WFP conducted a PDM exercise for refugee response including General Food Distribution (GFD) and ACL in Lobua refugee settlement.

• PDM monitoring results show that households consuming sufficient food have decreased from 62% in August 2023 to 59% in March 2024. Moreover, the proportion of households with insufficient food consumption remains very low at 2%. Due to increased rice production and consistent distribution schedules through the ACL program, the average Reduced Coping Strategy Index (rCSI) has decreased from 21.7 in August 2023 to 14.0 in March 2024.

• evaluation: WFP, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and other partners, conducted a joint mission to Huila province to assess the food security and nutrition situation. The delegation visited a project implemented by World Vision and met with the Vice-Governor of Huila province, who stressed the need for active UN coordination on the ground. In addition, focus group discussions were held in the municipalities of Humpata and Chibia.
