Santa Cruz and summer go together like surfboards and sex wax. Its mix of beach vibes, outdoor adventure and community spirit makes it the perfect place to enjoy sunny days.

But too much of a good thing can leave you feeling tired and dry. Staying healthy is only possible if you take the right steps. These simple health tips will keep you feeling good.

Sun protection skin care

Before you head outside, whether you’re going to be outside for a long or short time, apply a generous amount of a good sunscreen. All the anti-aging products on the market are no match for this daily habit to keep your skin healthy. Be sure to reapply every few hours, especially after swimming or exercise.

One more thing to note about sunscreen: Many popular brands contain chemicals that you should avoid. In fact, only about a quarter of products meet the Environmental Working Group’s standards for providing adequate sun protection and avoiding ingredients associated with “known health hazards.” Check out ewg.org for your best options, or stop by Staff of Life or New Leaf to talk to a local expert.

Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes. With so many great boutiques to choose from, like The Hat Company on Pacific Avenue, Kickbacks on Capitola Avenue, and Bunnies in Aptos, it’s easy to embrace summer by using the sun wisely.

Hydrate like a pro

Hydration is key to maintaining energy levels and hydrating your skin from the inside out. Keep a reusable water bottle on hand to stay hydrated with local tap water or filtered water. Don’t like plain water? Add a squeeze of lemon or slices of cucumber for a refreshing taste.

A word about plastic water bottles: microplastics. Plastic bottles are not only bad for our health, they’re also bad for the environment. Instead of buying bottled water, switch to tap water. Studies show that more than 96% of U.S. community water systems meet government drinking water standards, and our community is no exception.

Taste fresh local produce

Head to your favorite farmers market for fresh fruits and vegetables; they’re in full swing this time of year. At the Aptos Farmers Market on Saturday, don’t miss the Cabrillo College produce stand and its amazing selection of hydroponic vegetables. Or try some fresh strawberries from Pinnacle Farms – perfect for snacking, slicing into shortcakes or salads.

Visit Dirty Girl Produce downtown on a Wednesday or at the Live Oak Market on a Sunday to pick up fresh leeks and green onions when they’re in season or choose from a variety of heirloom produce. Stroll through the Scotts Valley or Westside Saturday markets for tender asparagus to steam or grill in hot weather. Or, visit Felton Market on a Tuesday night to try something new.

Move your body

Enjoy the great outdoors with activities like surfing, paddleboarding, hiking and biking. Whether you’re catching some waves at Steamer Lane or hiking the Nisene Marks trails, getting moving will lift your spirits.

Mindful Moments

Find time to relax and rejuvenate. Whether it’s yoga on the beach, meditating by the waves, or a quiet walk through the redwoods at Yakushi Nyorai Land, these moments of mindfulness will help you feel calm and stress-free, no matter what.

Eco-friendly practices

Reduce your impact on the environment by bringing reusable bags, avoiding single-use plastics, and supporting local eco-friendly businesses. Help keep Santa Cruz beautiful for generations to come. Visit Ethos in Capitola Village for ethically sourced, sustainable products and live a zero-waste lifestyle.

Stay connected

Spend quality time with friends and family. Plan a bonfire on the beach in New Brighton, Twin Lakes or Sea Bright. Have a picnic at a local park or a potluck barbecue in your backyard. Strengthening connections and building lasting friendships are key to health and wellness all year round.

Make the most of this sunny season and we wish you a happy, healthy and memorable summer in Santa Cruz.
