DALLAS (BP)—In a statement posted on the Oak Cliff Bible Church’s website, church leaders announced that senior pastor Tony Evans has resigned from his position on the church’s staff because he “has not met the church’s high standards.” [S]Church leaders said the “difficult decision” was made after much prayer and multiple meetings with Evans and church elders.
“The Presbytery has the duty to govern the church according to the rules of the church. [S]”Dr. Evans and the elders agree that when elders or pastors fail to meet the high biblical standards, the elders will be held accountable and the integrity of the church will be maintained,” a statement posted on the church’s website said.
Evans, who has served the church for 48 years, sent a letter to members saying the reasons for the decision “occurred several years ago.”
“While I have not committed a crime, my actions were not based on good judgment,” he wrote. “In light of this, I will be stepping away from my pastoral duties and following the healing and restoration process established by the elders which will allow me the time I need for spiritual recovery and healing.”
“The foundation of our ministry has always been our commitment to follow God’s Word, which is the highest standard of absolute truth that we must abide by. When we fall short of that standard because of sin, we need to repent and restore our relationship with God. A few years ago, I fell short of that standard.
“So I need to apply the same Biblical standard of repentance and restoration to myself that I have applied to others. I have communicated this to my wife, children and church elders, and they have extended their loving arms of grace to me.”
Further details about the case have not been released. Evans has said he plans to continue holding church services in Oak Cliff while the case is pending.
“I have never loved you more than I do now and I trust that God will guide me through this valley. I thank you for your love, prayers, support and forgiveness as I continue on my spiritual healing journey. As we walk this journey together, keep your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,” Evans said.
