The five-hour standoff in the normally quiet Boardman neighborhood was sparked by a woman experiencing a mental health crisis, police there said.
Neighbors living along the 3900 block of Arden Boulevard called police three times beginning Sunday afternoon to report a woman yelling at neighbors and hurling racial slurs at a juvenile.
Police said the woman had a machete strapped to her waist, a knife hidden in her trousers and a pocket knife hidden in her bra.
On the first two occasions, the woman yelled racial slurs at police and slammed the door of her home in their faces, police said.
When officers came to the home for the third time just after 6 p.m., a neighbor showed officers a video of a woman “vigorously swinging hedge pruners at bushes and yelling for neighbors to come over.”
Neighbours are concerned about the children and police said they are also concerned for the safety of the woman’s six-year-old child.
Police and SWAT teams surrounded the home.
At about 10:30 p.m., officers used a megaphone to call out to a woman inside the home.
Just before 11pm, the woman was removed from the home and admitted to hospital for examination.
Police say they plan to lay charges of inducing panic and obstructing official business.
