NEW DELHI: As part of efforts to promote traditional and alternative medical systems and harmonize it with modern medicine, India’s health ministry is planning to set up Ayurveda centres across the AIIMS campus.
The ministry is working with the Ayurveda ministry to develop the centre, which will have a separate outpatient department, offer panchakarma therapy and have a free Ayurvedic medicine counter for patients. “The government plans to set up Ayurveda or Ayurvedic in all AIIMS facilities.” “It will not only bring about harmony between the health systems but also provide multidisciplinary treatment to patients,” said an official familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The centre will create standard treatment protocols and sensitise patients about healthy lifestyles, he added. The government is seeking to promote Ayurvedic medicines and treatments globally and Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first-ever WHO World Centre for Traditional Medicines in Jamnagar in April last year. The health ministry is also developing a separate department for Ayurveda under the Director General of Health Services to strengthen collaboration between both the health systems. AYUSH has formulated guidelines for the use of Ayurvedic medicines in treatment and control of infectious diseases, which the ministry said are backed by scientific research and evidence. According to the center, the market for Ayurveda, yoga, naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and homeopathy has grown from $3 billion in 2014 to more than $18 billion, and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15 percent between 2020 and 2021-2026.
