CORBIN — On June 7, the City of Corbin will unveil an outdoor fitness court at the corner of Poplar and 7th Streets, improving and enhancing the quality of life for southeastern Kentucky residents. The capital project is the centerpiece of a 2024 initiative launched by national health consulting firm National Fitness Campaign (NFC). NFC partners with municipalities and schools to plan, build and fund healthy communities. NFC’s award-winning work is now poised to plan America’s 500th healthy community and deliver vital outdoor health programming to help combat the obesity epidemic across the nation.
This year, the city of Corbin and dozens of selected recipients from across the country were awarded $30,000 in grants from NFC to support the program. In addition to the grants, local funding also helped make the project a reality in Corbin.
“We are pleased to provide Corbin residents with even more opportunities to live healthier lifestyles,” said Mayor Suzie Rasmus. “Residents will be encouraged to take advantage of our new fitness courts, access online training via QR codes on-site, and utilize our studio space for fitness classes such as yoga and Zumba.”
“The City of Corbin Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to partner with the National Fitness Campaign to provide even more diverse fitness opportunities for residents of Corbin and southeastern Kentucky,” said Jacob Rohn, City of Corbin Parks and Recreation Director. “We strive to develop and maintain facilities that provide healthy opportunities for all people in our community. The Corbin Fitness Court is the latest addition to Corbin’s extensive parks and recreation system.”
The newly opened Corbin Fitness Court at Poplar & 7th is an outdoor gym where users can use their own body weight to get a complete workout with seven stations. Made for adults ages 14 and up, the Fitness Court is adaptable for all fitness levels. Users can also download the free Fitness Court app, a pocket coach-style platform that transforms the world’s best outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness experience. The Fitness Court app is available on iOS and Android.
“We’re pleased to have the City of Corbin join us in our health and wellness efforts to build healthy infrastructure and positively impact communities across the U.S.,” said National Fitness Campaign founder Mitch Menage. “The addition of the fitness court and continued commitment to healthy lifestyles demonstrates a tremendous commitment to the community.”
Residents are invited to try out the fitness courts and learn about upcoming community wellness events and programs at the Open Day Launch Event on June 7 at 10 a.m. For more information, contact Corbin Parks & Recreation at 606-528-6657.
