Makeup tips to make your face look younger have become big business on Instagram.
Posts with tips like how to use eyeliner for a youthful look or blush to hide wrinkles are hit thousands of times every day.
But does applying the slap really make your skin look younger?
Make-up artist and influencer Kate Hughes says: work Now, after more than three decades, she’s ready to reveal her secrets.
“I know what it’s like when your face doesn’t reflect how you’re feeling inside,” says Kate, 54. “When I hit my 50s, I suddenly felt like no one paid any attention to me. My skin became dry and dull. Menopause hit.”
“If you use the wrong technique, it can all go wrong.
“But with a few simple, easy tips, you can bring back the shine and brightness.”
In a special experiment for Fabulous, Kate used a variety of techniques to show how a few simple changes can make you look years younger.
Techniques to look aged beautifully
I give it to you One Shine, define structure
Lengthen your eyebrows
To make her look younger, she used a pencil on the high part of her eyebrows and made the tail longer.
This frames the face and gives it a slight lift.
Always try to match the natural color of your eyebrows. Use a soft pencil and sharpen it. Also, use a brush to brush your eyebrows upwards.
Eyebrow mascara is also very good, but be sure to wipe the brush off of the tube before applying.
Please take a quick look
To create definition, use an angled brow brush and a deep aubergine or maroon eyeshadow instead of black, as these colours are more suitable for mature skin tones.
Colour-wise, anything goes, but it’s important to get the technique right: use a brush along the lash line and then flick upwards at the end to create the appearance of lift.
It will give you a much more youthful appearance. Tube mascara is a good option because it wraps around your lashes and is easier to remove than waterproof mascara.
Highly painted bronze
For a more youthful appearance, apply bronzer higher on your cheekbones than usual to lift and give your face a more lifted look.
Next, apply blush slightly high on your cheekbones – this will give you a nice ‘lifted’ effect – use something with just a hint of shimmer, but don’t apply too much as you don’t want to accentuate fine lines and wrinkles.
Outline your lips
At its best, it overlines a little, but doesn’t reach the corners.
This will make your lips look a little fuller and more voluminous, and not pinched or small. I also used a red, which brightens up your lips. If you want to go for a bright, bold lip, go for it. It will brighten up your look and give you more confidence.
You might think that matte lipsticks and lip glosses are a no-no, but they can be worn if you use the right technique.
Use a Light Base
Use a product that moisturizes and gives a glow, such as a BB cream.
Make sure you choose a color that matches your skin tone.
Preparing your skin with a primer before applying foundation will help your makeup spread better.
Apply the same foundation all over your face to even out your skin tone, then use concealer to cover any imperfections, like dark circles under your eyes or blemishes.
Aging Technique
Makes skin look flatter and pulls features down
Avoid thick eyebrows
I used an eyebrow pencil to line my eyebrows and just below them.
I kept the ends quite short and brushed them downwards to avoid them looking too long – eyebrows should frame the face, but this doesn’t look very flattering.
This causes the face to tilt downwards, making the face look older.
Make sure the color isn’t too dark as it will make your eyebrows look flat.
Do not use kohl eyeliner
Here, I used a black kohl pencil eyeliner, a technique that was popular in the ’90s but has now become outdated.
This is a perfect example of why you should always reevaluate your makeup routine and never rely on it just because that’s the way you’ve always done it.
Draw a line from the corner of your eye all the way down your lashes, then draw a little downwards at the end.
He has a very stiff expression and his eyes are drooping, making his face look older.
Don’t blush
The bronzer here is applied under the cheekbones.
We’ve always been taught to apply blush on our cheekbones, but as we get older, that can fall off.
Again, applying blush will make your face droop and your skin look older.
Another word of warning: never use anything completely matte, as this can make dull skin look even duller.
Don’t draw lines at the corners of your mouth
Here, I placed the lip liner just below the lip line and applied it all the way to the corners of my lips.
This is something you should not do, and the results can prove quite unpleasant.
This technique can create small natural downward creases at the corners of your mouth, making your face appear downward.
Avoid applying eyeliner to your lips as it will make them droop.
Do not use matte foundation
Thick, matte foundations can flatten your complexion and make you look older, while ones that are too light can look unflattering, so it’s best to choose one that matches your skin tone.
Be careful not to use too much, as it can accentuate fine lines. Many makeup artists on Instagram say to avoid applying concealer under your eyes or using color correctors to hide dark circles, as they can clog lines.
However, as long as the concealer isn’t too thick it’s fine and works well.
