LINCOLN — After beginning as a pilot project earlier this year, participants in Nebraska’s Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) can now order groceries online.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services partnered with WIC counterparts in Minnesota and Iowa to secure a grant from the Center for Nutrition and Health Impact to implement the online ordering program.
Nebraska officials announced that they began a pilot of online ordering at a Hy-Vee store in Lincoln in March of this year, and in May, the pilot project was expanded to all Hy-Vee stores in Nebraska that offer online pickup services.
Nebraska’s WIC program serves about 35,000 economically disadvantaged people across the state each month, said Charity Menefee, director of DHHS’s public health division.
“Adding online ordering capabilities to our WIC program will help children and families have better access to nutritious foods to support bright and promising futures,” she said.
According to a statement from the project, the program aims to create an equitable shopping experience for participants, reduce the stigma associated with using WIC benefits and overcome the barriers of transportation and time constraints.
