Key Takeaways
- The nicotine-free VitaminVape is marketed as a health device that provides vitamin supplements and helps improve certain health conditions.
- But there’s no evidence to suggest it works or actually provides any benefit, experts say.
- Additionally, they may pose health risks associated with regular e-cigarettes.
E-cigarette vitamins have become increasingly popular in recent years, but experts say the devices aren’t necessarily better for your health.
Nicotine-free e-cigarettes are promoted as health products, but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning: “Some e-cigarette products are illegally marketed under unproven health or wellness claims,” the agency said in a 2021 statement.
Experts said that while Vitamin Vapes are growing in popularity, there’s no way to know what chemicals are in them because the FDA doesn’t regulate them like drugs.
“I don’t recommend inhaling vitamins with e-cigarettes. [related to vaping] “We’ve seen this happen before,” Michael Ong, MD, professor in the UCLA School of Medicine and Health Policy and Management, told Verywell. “Before COVID-19, we saw a lot of young people end up on ventilators and hospitalized with injuries from e-cigarettes and vaping.”
Some of the harmful ingredients found in traditional vapes and e-cigarettes may also be present in VitaminVape. “To be honest, no one knows what’s in them,” Dr Ong explained.
Is Vitamin Vape safe?
Online reviews of Vitamin Vape often claim that it can help people with a variety of health issues, including mental illnesses such as anxiety.
But experts said there was no evidence to suggest VitaminVape had any effect, despite its growing popularity.
“Because Vitamin Vape is new, we don’t actually know much about the benefits or risks,” Dr. Humberto Choi, a pulmonologist at the Cleveland Clinic, told Verywell. Experts said that’s true for all the health claims Vitamin Vape makers make about how their devices can help.
These devices are so new that researchers don’t have enough data to say definitively they’re harmful, but given past injuries caused by e-cigarettes, it’s not unreasonable to think that vitamin e-cigarettes could have downsides, Choi said.
“Historically, we [vaping] “The best example is the acute pneumonia outbreak that occurred just before the COVID-19 pandemic. Many young people became ill, were hospitalized, and some died. [injuries] Related to e-cigarettes.”
Research on e-cigarettes is still developing, but experts have theorized about what could be causing the illness. Dr Ong said: [that outbreak] It’s called Vitamin E Acetate. [which] It is used to increase the viscosity of liquids.”
Dr Ong said there was no reason to think that “healthy e-cigarettes” or “vitamin e-cigarettes” did not contain the same harmful substances found in other e-cigarettes, such as vitamin E acetate.
In addition to vitamin E acetate, some ingredients in vapes, including VitaminVape, may be safe to ingest but not safe when taken in vape form. “We know that some things that are safe when taken orally may not necessarily be safe when heated in a vape pen and then inhaled,” Dr. Ong explained.
Are Vitamin Vapes Better than Traditional Vitamins?
Researchers don’t know if vitamins taken via e-cigarettes are absorbed, or if they’re even absorbed at all.
But given that other substances are absorbed in this way, such as when drugs are administered through an inhaler, the device could effectively deliver the vitamin to the body. “I think the answer is probably that some of it will be absorbed throughout the body,” Dr. Choi said.
That said, for those looking for a way to get vitamins, the risks outweigh the potential benefits. “It’s pretty hard to recommend. [vitamin vapes] Other [proven] “There are lots of ways to get vitamins,” Dr Ong said.
Some e-cigarettes or vapes that contain nicotine may help people quit smoking, but research on the topic is limited.
But nicotine-free Vitamin Vapes don’t fall into that category, and therefore may not offer any benefit to people trying to quit smoking. If you’re looking for help quitting, experts say you should talk to your doctor, who can help you decide whether nicotine products would help you.
Because vaping vitamins has no proven effectiveness, experts say it may be more cost-effective and healthier to take regular vitamins or include more vitamin-rich foods in your diet.
Dr Ong also pointed out that vaping and e-cigarettes are often promoted among young people and parents should be aware that VitaminVape could be dangerous for their children.
“It’s important for parents to talk to their children and understand what they’re getting into,” says Dr Ong. “These types of products are not generally recommended by pediatricians.”
What this means for you
“Healthy Vapes” and “Vitamin Vapes” are promoted as vitamin-rich health devices, and some users claim they can help improve anxiety and other health conditions. But experts say there’s no evidence that these devices provide any benefits. In fact, Vitamin Vapes may carry risks. Vitamin Vapes can cause lung inflammation and other problems associated with regular vaping.
