The pool at Rosewood Mayakoba is noticeably less crowded than the nearby resorts in Cancun and Playa. … [+] Del Carmen.

Rosewood Mayakoba

Known for destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo is one of the country’s busiest tourist destinations, welcoming an estimated 8.3 million visitors last year. Because the beaches are public, it can be hard to find the quiet respite you typically seek when booking a tropical getaway. But there is one tranquil retreat amid the hustle and bustle of the beach: Rosewood Mayakoba. Built along a canal, the 620-acre resort is tucked away in Mayakoba, a private gated community 30 minutes from Cancun International Airport.

With its 595-acre tranquil lagoon, lush jungle and white sand beaches, Mayakoba feels a world away from the busier beaches of nearby Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The abundant natural environment lends itself to countless outdoor explorations, from kayaking in the mangrove-protected lagoon to encountering adorable blue whales on a 2.5-mile nature trail or exploring Cenote El Brodromo, one of the country’s estimated 10,000 open-air caves. With 80 percent of its mangrove forests intact, Mayakoba is a haven for migratory birds, perfect for birdwatching. Offshore, the world’s second-largest barrier reef invites divers and snorkelers to explore the crystal-clear waters. While the concept of a gated community may sound off-putting to those who enjoy wandering, the property’s own “El Pueblito” is a tiny Mexican village filled with colorful mission-style architecture, Mexican restaurants, and boutique shops, offering a glimpse into local culture.

Mayakoba’s town square features a mission-style chapel.

Of the four resorts at Mayakoba, Rosewood stands out for its unique accommodations, award-winning cuisine, and locally-inspired wellness services. Guests are whisked to their rooms by boat, rather than on foot, and navigate a serene ride through the resort’s winding canals before arriving at their private dock. With rustic-chic décor and light wood furnishings, an outdoor shower, and a plunge pool overlooking the lagoon, the Lagoon Suite is a departure from the typical Mexican beach resort room.

For beach-loving guests, the Ocean View Suites are the perfect choice. These two- or three-story rooms overlook the ocean and family pool, and each comes with its own private plunge pool and rooftop deck. While even the most basic rooms are impressive, the Presidential Suites and Lagoon Villas are the standouts. Ranging from 3,497 to 7,000 square feet, they’re perfect for longer stays. Regardless of room type, all guests enjoy 24-hour butler service.

The Lagoon Presidential Suite features a spacious terrace and plunge pool.

While guests can lounge all day in their private plunge pool, the resort also has four pools and, of course, the beach. With a family pool, an adults-only pool and a hydrotherapy pool, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The hydrotherapy pool stands out with its self-massaging water streams and the tranquil setting of Sense A Rosewood Spa. Wellness seekers will want to linger to experience the spa’s hydrotherapy circuit, which includes saunas, steam rooms, hot pools and cold plunge pools.

Inspired by ancient Mayan rituals and incorporating locally sourced ingredients, spa treatments range from men’s haircuts to anti-aging facials to hot and cold therapy massages. Outdoors, guests can experience a sensory garden ritual based on the ancient beliefs of Mayan shamans, or the increasingly popular Temazcal (sweat lodge) ceremony led by the resort’s resident shaman. In the latter, aromatic perfumes are poured over hot stones, creating steam to flush toxins from the body, while mantra chanting and sensory rituals encourage introspection.

In honor of the Mayan spring equinox on March 21, a new Copal and Cacao Appreciation Ceremony will incorporate ceremonial drumming, meditation and heart-opening rituals to purify and balance the mind. Those seeking a full-scale wellness retreat can participate in a Cenote Healing Retreat, a multi-day journey customized to the guest’s needs, visiting two off-site “secret” cenotes where guests will experience a cleansing moment to find inner transformation. Returning to the resort, guests looking to turn their vacation into a wellness retreat will want to rest in one of Rosewood’s eight wellness suites. The two-story loft features Ayurvedic amenities such as essential oils and chakra stones, as well as wellness equipment such as a meditation pavilion, circadian light lamps and a reflexology fountain. Those looking to get active can join the resort’s fitness classes, from indoor cycling to Bosu training, HIIT and yoga on a floating paddleboard in the pool. Mayakoba is also home to Latin America’s first PGA Tour golf course, El Camaleon.

While Rosewood Mayakoba’s accommodations and wellness are among the best in the region, the food here is far from typical Mexican resort fare. Designed to take guests on a culinary journey across Mexico, the resort’s eight restaurants and bars each showcase the flavors of a different Mexican region. Seaside Punta Bonita Restaurant showcases the flavors of Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, highlighting the culinary traditions of Mexico’s most diverse states: Michoacan, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas. Here, guests can learn how to make fresh, homemade tortillas in a comal and choose from a selection of catch-of-the-day platters during a seafood-centric multi-course lunch.

Seafood also takes center stage at Agave Azul, the resort’s Baja-inspired restaurant, which combines Chinese and Japanese techniques with local ingredients. Sushi gets a Mexican twist with plantains, jicama and serrano chiles, and the “Yucatan Ramen” is like turkey broth topped with pork belly and tortilla chips. Casa del Lago’s focus on Central Mexico means Mexican breakfast staples like chilaquiles and four kinds of huevos rancheros are on offer in the morning, and Italian-inspired dishes in the evening.

Each of Rosewood Mayakoba’s eight dining concepts represents the charm of a different region of Mexico.

But the most exquisite dining experience can be found at Ceiba Garden & Kitchen, where a long communal table set up beneath the lantern-lit ceiba trees in the chef’s garden offers the rare opportunity to savor a multi-course menu with other guests and Rosewood staff. Featuring seasonal ingredients from the Yucatan Peninsula and surrounding gardens, the multi-course dinner is prepared using traditional open-fire techniques and served beneath twinkling electric lights while a Yucatan musical trio plays.

Afterwards, you can keep your energy up at the resort’s cocktail hotspot, Zapote Bar. Named one of the 50 Best Bars in North America and the 50 Best Bars in the World, Zapote Bar is a cocktail lover’s dream, serving up new takes on cult classics (like the Piña Colada, made with aquafaba and mezcal), carbonated drinks infused with carbon dioxide and nitrogen, fermented cocktails, and non-alcoholic elixir cocktails.

Foodies will want to keep an eye on Rosewood Mayakoba’s calendar, which regularly brings in chefs and bartenders from some of the world’s best restaurants. The resort’s latest Yo Amo Mexico festival runs through the end of March and offers guests a number of culinary adventures, including a three-day “Rockies on the Riviera” activation featuring Colorado chefs such as Chef Ian Palazzola, James Beard Award winner of Michelin-starred restaurant Frasca Food and Wine, and Chef Michael Diaz de Leon of Michelin-starred restaurant BRUTØ.

In addition to culinary experiences with local and international chefs and bartenders, the festival will host contemporary Mexican artists to host workshops, curate on-site gallery presentations and engage guests in restorative wellness practices, including sound healing meditations and energy cleansing ceremonies led by a resident shaman. Proceeds from the festival will benefit Centro Educativo, K’iin Beh and Rosewood Mayakoba schools in Playa del Carmen.

Rosewood Mayakoba offers a unique location on the lagoon and a wide range of programs. … [+] This resort stands out from the rest in the area.

Rosewood Mayakoba

From locally inspired festivals to distinctive regional cuisine, Rosewood Mayakoba expands the possibilities of your beach getaway by offering a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in Mexico’s diverse culture without leaving the country.
