Pittsburgh, Kansas – Low-income Kansas seniors may be eligible for a program that provides them with a check to purchase fresh, unprocessed fruits, vegetables and honey at farmers markets in select counties across the state.
The Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (KSFMNP) will provide low-income seniors who meet age and income requirements with a $50 check to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from certified farmers at their local participating farmers markets from June 1 through September 30, 2024. Checks can be purchased in $5 increments.
To be eligible to receive a KSFMNP check, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Age: Seniors must be 60 years of age or older on the date the money is issued.
2. Income Level: Seniors’ annual total household income (before taxes are withheld) must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty level. For example, for a one-person household, annual total income must be no more than $27,861 or monthly total income must be no more than $2,322.
Applications for the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program will be accepted beginning June 3 at the Pittsburgh Public Housing Authority, located at 101 N Pine St. Seniors can apply on-site Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm (the office is closed for lunch from 12pm to 1pm). Seniors must show valid identification. Funds are limited and benefits are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
