East Africa (MNN) — Experts predict East Africa is set to be the world’s fastest growing economy over the next 20 years, but pockets of extreme poverty remain.
In 2019, Freely configurable I started Christian High School The site, which cannot be named for safety reasons, is in a poor area: “It’s a very, very rundown area,” says Dave McIntyre of Set Free.
“The area is so backward that the government has pretty much abandoned the whole area from development. Most people who live there will find a good job somewhere else as a truck driver or in construction or whatever it takes to get out of the area.”
But there is still hope. God is using a young believer named Wilbur to change the status quo.

Wilbur is the only person in the area who went to college. “Not only did he go to college and major in engineering, he came back. He wanted to make an impact on people in the community,” McIntyre said.
“His pastor took him under his wing, discipled him, raised him to know Christ, and he followed God’s will for his life.”
Currently, Wilbur oversees a large-scale hydroelectric project to meet the energy needs of Wright Academy, a Christian high school in Sete-Free, which also provides lighting for homes throughout the area.
“He’s the community liaison and the local people are thrilled that we’re bringing in hydropower because they know that without the school they wouldn’t have electricity here,” McIntyre said.
As believers like Wilbur meet temporal and spiritual needs, pray that people’s hearts would be opened to the gospel. “The Lord was preparing people in that area to work with us,” McIntyre says.
“The light is shining brighter than ever.”
Please pray that many people will come to know the Lord through Light Academy. For more information about Light Academy, please click here.
“When we first started building, they said the project would not succeed because no sacrifices were being made to the local devil,” McIntyre says. “When they say sacrifice, they’re not talking about a goat; they’re talking about a child.”
