Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid floral tributes to Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar after completing a 45-hour meditation session in Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu.
After the meditation session, PM Modi, dressed in white, visited the 133-feet-tall Thiruvalluvar statue next to the rock memorial and laid a huge wreath there in his memory. PM Modi began his 45-hour meditation on the evening of May 30 and concluded it on Saturday.
The Prime Minister used to meditate day and night at the same place where Swami Vivekananda used to meditate at the Dhyan Mandapam.
According to officials, PM Modi performed ‘Surya Argya’ during sunrise at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial earlier today before beginning the third and final day of meditation at Kanniyakumari.
During his stay at the memorial, the Prime Minister meditated and performed ‘Surya Argya’, a ritual related to spiritual practices, at sunrise.
Modi performed the Surya Argya ritual, which involves a spiritual practice involving salutation to the almighty God in the form of the sun. The Prime Minister left for Thiruvananthapuram in a helicopter and flew to Delhi from there.
Kanyakumari is famous for its sunrises and sunsets and the memorial is on a small island close to the coast. The Prime Minister began his 45-hour meditation at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial on May 30 evening and concluded it on Saturday.
Kanyakumari’s visit sparked opposition from voters across India, including from Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK party, over the broadcast of the meditation in view of the final phase of polls on June 1.
Tamil Nadu Congress president K Selvaperuntagai told reporters on Saturday that meditators were meditating alone and peacefully without any disturbance.
At the start of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi chose the Kedarnath Caves as a place of reflection and meditation after the election campaign ended.
