While some foods are so popular that no one knows why, others make perfect sense. We’re talking about bacon. Sure, it was all the rage about a decade ago, with everything from bacon-flavored lip gloss to bacon-themed t-shirts appearing in every store, but there’s a reason it became so popular. Who could resist that salty, savory, and ridiculously appetizing taste? Bacon may not be the cultural icon it once was, but it still undoubtedly has a place in the hearts of many foodies. Bacon lovers, get ready, because Martha Stewart has shared a recipe to easily make everything you eat bacon-inspired. This is a savory, sweet, smoky-flavored slow cooker bacon jam that you’ll be slathering on everything you put on your plate this summer.
If you’ve ever tried candied bacon or nibbled on a crispy morsel of maple syrup on a pancake, you already know how delicious the combination of salty, smoky pork and sugar is. Martha Stewart’s Bacon Jam recipe uses that experience to create a spread that can be used to enhance the flavor of burgers, biscuits, sandwiches, pizza, cheese plates, and many other foods.
First, crisp the bacon in a skillet. You can’t do this step in a slow cooker, so don’t skip it or your jam will turn into a greasy mess. Once the bacon is crispy, set it aside, reserving most of the bacon fat for another use (like biscuits). Next, saute the onion and garlic in 1 tablespoon of the bacon fat, add the liquid ingredients and bring everything to a boil.
But that’s the end of the cook time on the stove, so you don’t have to worry about this recipe keeping your kitchen steaming for long. For the rest of the time, transfer all of the ingredients to a slow cooker and cook until the liquid thickens and becomes syrupy and infused with smoky bacon flavor.
What liquid ingredients does Stewart call for? She uses apple cider vinegar to give the recipe the tartness it needs, dark brown sugar and maple syrup for a hint of sweetness, and her secret ingredient: freshly brewed coffee, which gives the jam an extra rich, roasted flavor.
Once the jam is cooked, you can chop it into a spreadable consistency in a food processor, bottle it and store it in the fridge for up to 4 weeks. However, I have a feeling Martha Stewart Slow Cooker Bacon Jam won’t last that long. From simply spreading it on toast to using it as a stuffing for chicken breasts with cheese, there are a million golden ways to use this dish. Is bacon a passing fad? Nah, I don’t think so!
