Thiruvananthapuram: A 36-year-old woman and her newborn baby tragically lost their lives while attempting a home birth with acupuncture at Kallakkandapam last night, police said in a statement on Wednesday. The deceased woman’s husband, Nayaz, a sound system worker from Poonthura, was detained by Nemom police on Wednesday morning following the shocking incident.
Police have registered the case as an unnatural death in this connection. According to authorities, this was Shemeera Beevi’s fourth birth and she had not sought medical assistance throughout her nine-month pregnancy.
According to police officers, instead of seeking medical advice, the couple visited an acupuncturist at their rented home. On Tuesday, the woman developed complications and was rushed to a private hospital in the evening. Sadly, doctors declared the woman and her baby dead.
After hearing the news of the deaths of the woman and her newborn, local councillors, ASHA workers and neighbours accused Nayaz of preventing his wife from seeking medical help and receiving proper treatment. District councillor Deepika revealed that her husband had barred ASHA workers from entering the house or speaking to Shemira.
“The family refused to let us into their home or provide any further information. After much persistence, one day we managed to enter the house and speak to her. That’s when we realised this was her fourth pregnancy,” said Deepika. All of Shemeera’s previous deliveries had been by Caesarean section, with her most recent birth exactly a year ago.
“Given her medical history, a natural delivery was not possible. She was unwilling to even speak to us over the phone. Nayaz maintained that she wanted a natural delivery and criticised the entire health system in the state,” the Congressman further explained. Deepika also alleged that Nayaz was planning to learn about natural delivery on YouTube.
An elderly neighbour also accused Nayaz of denying Shemira proper medical treatment. “Shemira is not allowed to contact us or leave the house alone. When we advised Nayaz to ensure his pregnant wife gets proper treatment, he dismissed our concerns saying it was a matter of his wife’s health and no one needed to worry,” she said.
Police are currently questioning Nayaz and further action will be taken once more details are known.
