CHENNAI: A day after the DMK and its allies opposed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meditation at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, the BJP and its ally TMC on Thursday slammed the political party for criticising Modi over the incident.
Tamilisai Soundararajan, BJP candidate from Chennai South constituency, said in a statement that the Opposition parties were opposing the visit out of jealousy. She said PM Modi was working hard for the prosperity of the country. On the Congress’s claim that tourists would be affected by PM Modi’s visit, she wondered why the Congress would turn a blind eye when tourists were affected during Prime Minister MK Stalin’s visit to Kodaikanal.
TMC president GK Vasan said in a statement that PM Modi’s decision to meditate at Vivekananda Rock has nothing to do with the final phase of LS polls and the Opposition is only opposing it out of political animosity. “We all accept that political leaders go to foreign countries and high places during election time. But it is unacceptable to criticise PM Modi’s decision to meditate at a spiritual place. I condemn the DMK, Indian National Congress and their allies for opposing PM Modi’s visit to Vivekananda Rock,” he added.
EPS reports worsening security situation in state
CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday accused Congress leader Stalin of “deteriorating” law and order in the state and asked the Chief Minister to give free rein to the police and crush anti-social elements with an iron fist. In a statement, Palaniswami recalled reports published in newspapers on May 30 of murders, robberies, crimes against women and land grabbing. The EPS alleged that the police’s hands are tied and they are being “unleashed” only on a select few. “Anti-social elements are taking control with full knowledge that the present government in Tamil Nadu will not stand in their way. This has resulted in a situation where neither the people nor the police personnel are protected,” he added.
PMAY scam: BJP seeks action against officials
CHENNAI: The BJP on Thursday demanded the arrest of officials against whom cases have been registered by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) for embezzling funds between 2016 and 2020 in the implementation of Pradhan Manthi Awas Yojana (PMAY-G), a central housing scheme for the rural poor in Tamil Nadu. BJP spokesperson ANS Prasad said in a statement that PMAY-G should take strict action against officials who committed fraud in the scheme and the state government should provide details of how many people have benefited since the DMK government came to power in 2021. The state government should expedite an investigation in this regard and officials involved in the scam should be sacked.
