New Delhi: PM Modi will meditate at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari from May 30 to June 1 after the end of the Lok Sabha election campaign. According to reports, during the final phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi visited Kedarnath temple and meditated in the cave. The PM’s passion for yoga and meditation has always inspired people to indulge in such activities to promote mental health.
In today’s fast-paced world, meditation plays an important role in people’s lives. This trend is on the rise, especially among the younger generation. Meditation practice primarily helps you to “know yourself better” and to “be more mindful and aware”. The meditation journey helps you stay in the present moment and helps you connect with your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Now, many people confuse yoga with meditation. What is the difference between them?
In a conversation with News 9Yoga expert Yogesh Chavan said, “Yoga has always been considered only as Yogasanas i.e. physical postures. But real yoga is much more than that like Ashtanga yoga. Among them, Pranayam (breathing exercises) and Dhyan (meditation) are very important and result oriented. Especially as the world is going through COVID-19, it was well understood that those who lack immunity suffer the most. Yoga gives and enhances autoimmunity 100% surely. Hence, Yogasanas constitute one-eighth of the total yoga.”
According to several studies, yoga meditation can help lower your blood pressure and heart rate throughout the day, minimize stress, and improve your stress management skills.
How is meditation different from yoga for your health?
According to Dr Chavan, “Meditation is a part of yoga as a whole. If you are asking how it is different from Yogasanas (physical postures), then you are right. Yogasanas help in physical development – increasing stamina, strength, flexibility etc. Meditation, on the other hand, helps in improving focus, improving mental health, increasing willpower and improving decision-making abilities.”
